[NI171411] MORRELL SWANK, memb of firm of Swank Hardware Co, Johnstown, this Co, s/o Jacob & Catherine (BORDER) Swank, & b Johnstown, Aug 6 1857. His gfather, Samuel Swank, was b & reared in Somerset Co, PA, where he engaged in agriculture all his life. He died in his native Co in 1884. Jacob Swank (father) was b Somerset Co, & moved to Cambria Co in 1856, locating Johnstown, where he engaged in pottery business, being a practical potter himself. He continued this business successfully until the time of late Civil War. In 1862 he embarked in hardware business in Johnstown & conducted the business successfully until the flood of 1889, in which he lost his life, aged 57 yrs. He was memb English Luth ch & in politics the Democratic party. Mr. Swank was a very successful business man. He was a hard worker, & by honest methods & close attention to business he gained confidence of all who knew him. He m Catherine BORDER, Somerset Co, who also lost her life in flood, resulted in birth of a number of chdn. Morrell Swank was reared Johnstown, & received a good common school education. On leaving school he entered his father's hardware store as clerk, & continued with him in that capacity until the great flood. His father having lost his life in the flood, Mr. Swank, in connection with his bros, Harry & George W., has conducted the business under the firm name of Swank Hardware Co. Mr. Swank has been twice m. In 1884 he was united in marriage with Miss Ella, d/o Dr. FRY, Johnstown. By the 1st marriage Mr. Swank has 1 dau living: Zora. In 1893 he m 2nd Miss Ariminta Fry, sis of deceased wife. In great flood of 1889 Mr. Swank lost his wife, 1 chld, father, mother, bro Freddie & sis Jennie, besides abt 20 other relatives.
