[NI185278] William Flohra, farmer & stockraiser, resides on sect 14, Pleasant Twp, where he owns 400 acs of land, constituting a valuable farm. He is well & comfortably settled in life, & considered one of most enterprising agriculturists of Twp, possessing the confidence of people. In his political views he is a Dem. He is s/o Frank & Mary Flohra, b in Germany, in 1828, immigrated to CA in 1855, lived there 10yrs, then was a resid 9 1/2yrs in the NY, [this was backwards, he was first in NY & then went to CA in 1855 for the gold rush] when he came to Union Co & purchased land where he now resids. Oral family history: William Flohra left NY working his way west. Stopped in Van Wert Co, OH at the Dibert's farm. I don't know if he knew them in Germany or what. Fell in love with Louisa, went on to the gold fields of CA. After getting his fortune he walked all the way back to IA with his gold strapped around his waist. Walked alone as he was afraid of getting robbed. It is said that he knew from Germany the wife of Charles Swanker [Schwenker/Schwanker] who maiden name was Seifker in Union Co, IA. William sent for Louisa & they were m in Union Co. After her death, probably complications from chdbth, he took the infant son, Samuel, back to Van Wert Co to be raised by Louisa's parents. Samuel did visit often in Union Co as an adult as his half-siblings all knew him well. William's 2nd m was to Sarah Weeter on 15 Jan 1871 in Union Co, IA.

[NI185317] DIBERT:
(4 Jun 1908) Asa Dibert, aged 23 yrs & s/o Mr. & Mrs. J. M. Dibert, residing in York Twp, 2 1/2 mis east of OH City, was instantly killed yest abt 12:45 pm, by being struck by passenger train No. 3, westbound, on Erie RR. The young man's body was thrown a considerable distance but was not mangled as was 1st announced. The only external injuries was to his right arm & right leg, both of which were broken. The injury to the right leg was a compound fracture just below the knee. No one saw the young man when he was struck, except the engineer & the fireman on the locomotive drawing the train. They stated to Erie agent at OH City, yest after the tragedy, that the young man was sitting on a suitcase with his face toward the train. That he seemingly failed to notice the approaching train & that an alarm was sounded by use of the engine whistle. Upon hearing the whistle he suddenly sprang to his ft in an attempt to get clear of the track. In this he was unsuccessful as the locomotive struck him before he had time to clear the rail. Coroner R. R. Richison was notified & he went to OH City at once. The body had been placed in the depot of the village when the coroner arrived. He held a brief investigation & adjourned the same until today when the train crew will be in the city to testify as to the unfortunate man's death. At the time of the death the father & mother were away attending a funeral of a bro to Mrs. Dibert, A. L. Pollock, Middlepoint. As soon as the body had been taken to OH City & had been identified by friends & acquaintances, a telephone message was sent to the parents of Middlepoint. Soon after the remains were removed to the undertaking rooms of H. A. Loe. As a result of the tragic death the parents are crushed with grief. Their family is one upon which affliction has placed a heavy hand. This same son only a few mos ago with a sis was in the Toledo hosp for those mentally affected. A few wks ago both were released, being pronounced cured of their affliction. At that time the mother exclaimed that it seemed so blessed to have her chdn with her again after so many mos of separation. 3 or 4 yrs ago the oldest dau d in OH City after a short sickness. Since the young man's return from the hosp he seemed to be his former self & whether he was seized by a spell to which he was subjected before his treatment at Toledo, is but a matter of conjecture. His derangement dated back to abt a yr ago when he complained of always having pain in his throat. He with other young men had been fishing at the reservoir. While there he insisted that a fish bone had lodged in his throat. A day or 2 ago he left home, taking with him his suit case & an exchange of clothing. He announced that he was going to Spencerville where he would try for a job with a gang of men who are putting in a string of piping for OH Oil Co. Presumably he did not succeed in getting the job, as he returned from Spencerville to Elgin on a train early yest forenoon. At that town he conversed with acquaintances & seemingly was all right. He left the village toward noon & walked west on railroad. Upon arriving at William Ries farm crossing 1/2 mi west of Little Auglaize watering sta, he stopped, placed the suit case in middle of track & sat down to rest. The remainder of the story has been told. Aside from father & mother, he leaves 2 bros, Gaylord & Homer, 3 sis', Alberta, Ruth & Mrs. T. H. Goodwin. The funeral will be from Meth ch, OH City, Fri 2 pm. The funeral party will leave the home at 1 pm. Bur OH City Cem.
(5 Jun 1908) Coroner R. R. Richison yest finished his investigation as to probable cause of death of Asa Dibert, the unfortunate young man who was killed at Little Auglaize water sta on the Erie RR 4 mis east of OH City, Wed abt noon. Engineer Robert Shaw & Fireman Carl Fulton of the train, & of Huntington, IN, were in the city as witnesses. Their testimony was abt as recited in yest's Times. The young man was sitting on his suit case in middle of track. The alarm whistle was sounded but evidently the young man did not hear it until the locomotive was upon him. Suddenly he leaped up but too late as the monster machine, running at a rate of 60 mph, had completed a tragedy before he could get to safety. The engine ran past abt 1000 ft before it could be stopped. The body was taken up & removed to OH City where the inquest was begun. Coroner R. R. Richison's findings were: That he came to his death by accidental means, by being struck by passenger train No. 3, on the Chicago & Erie RR. I am convinced from testimony that he made an effort to get out of danger but due to the high rate of speed at which the train was going, he did not have time.
(6 Jun 1908) The funeral of Asa Dibert, whose death was caused by an Erie train, Wed, was held at Meth ch, OH City, yest. Revs. Ralph Wright & W. E. Turner had charge of servs. A lge concourse of people assembled at the home & at the church to see the deceased & to hear the sermon. Mrs. Jacob Turner, South Chestnut st, this city, & Otto Elrich & wife attended the funeral. Mrs. Turner is sis to Mrs. Dibert, mother of the deceased young man. Bur OH City Cem.
