*Ole Pedersen Clausen [Parents] 1, 2, 3 was born 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 1 or 24 Jun 1858 in Denmark. He died 9, 10 on 24 Dec 1937 in Hartford, Sebastian co, AR and was buried 11, 12 on 25 Dec 1937 in Center __ Cem; Hartford, Sebastian co, AR. *Ole married 13, 14 *Mary Christen Pederson on 8 Dec 1887 in Ottawa, Franklin co, KS.

Family tradition has it that my great grandparents, Ole Clausen/Clawson and Mary Peterson/Pederson (both from Denmark), worked and met on the Silkville Farm, in Franklin county, Kansas; they may have resided there as well.
Silkville was started in the 1860's by a Frenchman named, Ernest Valeton De Boissiere, who had the idea to raise silk worms on the leaves of the mulberry trees he had planted for this purpose. This farm or ranch consisted of over 3,000 acres and was first worked by French families Mr. De Boissiere had brought over to inhabit this communal living, silk producing ranch. These families, however, began leaving in order to homestead and obtain their own property.
Beginning in the 1870's the Danish and other nationalities began showing up on the ranch. Perhaps this is the reason Ole Clausen intended to go to "Lawrence, Kansas, USA" while still in Denmark; Lawrence is about 30 miles north of the Silkville Ranch. (I wonder if Ole ever had a premonition that about a hundred years later, he would have three great grandsons born in Lawrence, Kansas)
There is a marriage license from Ottawa, Kansas (which is just a few mile East of Silkville) for Ole P. Clausen of Williamsburg, Kansas and Miss May Peterson of Williamsburg, Kansas; dated 8 Dec 1887. My grandfather, Fred Clawson, was born in Williamsburg, the 28th of September 1888; this is the same birth date (28 Sept 1950) as my sister Debby.
Williamsburg is about seven miles to the east of Agricola, Kansas where my grandfather's brother, Charlie, was born about 1890; Silkville is located between these two towns.
Our mother says that Ole's wife, Mary, changed the spelling of Clausen to Clawson causing it to appear Swedish instead of Danish; supposedly the Swedes were more respected at this time then were the Danes; or, it might also have been a matter of interpertation, the letters are difficult to distinguish when looking at the written name.

He enjoyed this new found life and took advantage of the travel to contact family members when he would be in the area of their residence. David's only regret was that he hadn't done this earlier, while his brother, Dana, was still living, and possibly making a difference in Dana's life by having him on the road with him. "I wrote Morris and you a letter in the summer and requested an answer, which I have never received." ;

"While I was at Patsies, I learned you had writen a letter to Nancy Duff stating the death of Morris. If you please, write to me every little insident connected with his death and especially the condition of his family." ;

"Morris and his wife, and a daughter and her child all died from typhoid. The boys who were old enough all went to war." ;
(from Wilma Hutchings; e-mail dated 26 Ap 2000)

In reference to Morris' children, Wilma wrote, " -- family stories are that one brother signed up for the Union during the Civil War. All the rest were in the Confederate. After the war they never heard from the one that was in the Union again. They tried to locate him, but to no avail." ;

I think I have my gr gr gr Grandmother, Sarah (Mills) Mitchell in the wrong Mills family; I'm looking into that; I think she probablly belongs in the family of one of John Mills brothers; will make the appropriate change when I have more information. Just another reminder that these are my working pages --- not etched in granite facts.

" If I should live till fall Sally and me is comming out to see you."

"Family members all say Morris & Sarah had 20 children. --- They said there was a sleeping loft in the cabin. At night they raised the table and chairs by ropes to the ceiling. During the day they raised the quilts up by ropes. Morris & Sarah were the only ones to have a bed and the baby slept with them. The rest of them slept 2 & 3 together on the floor and covered up together."
