Barth Gassen [Parents] [image] 1, 2, 3 was born 4, 5, 6 on 5 Sep 1875 in Kreuzberg, Province of the Rhine, Germany. He died 7, 8, 9, 10 on 17 Apr 1925 in Wichita, Sedgwick co, KS and was buried 11 in Holy Trinity Cemetery; Okarche, Canadian co, OK. Barth married 12, 13 Mary Hoffmann on 8 Apr 1913 in Carroll, Carroll co, IA.

Barth took part in the 1905 Oklahoma land rush. He had land in Comanche county, by Elgin, Oklahoma"; however, Marie, his daughter, is unsure if he ever lived there.
Barth was a farmer, living near Okarche, Oklahoma; "He raised wheat, oats and hay for the cattle. They had a few horses and sold cream and eggs."
(Information from Barth's daughter, Marie (Gassen) Hale & Marie's daughter, Pat (Hale) Wilson)

Mary Hoffmann [Parents] [image] 1, 2 was born 3, 4, 5 on 7 Mar 1885 in Carroll, Carroll co, IA. She died 6, 7, 8, 9 on 24 Jun 1957 in Okarche, Kingfisher co, OK and was buried 10, 11 in Holy Trinity Cem; Okarche, Canadian co, OK. Mary married 12, 13 Barth Gassen on 8 Apr 1913 in Carroll, Carroll co, IA.

It must have been difficult for Mary when her husband Barth died at the age of 49. Mary did what she had to do to provide for her family. She, with her two young children, Marie, age 10 and Joe, age two "moved into town and stayed with Grandma Margaretha Gassen for 2 years, until they bought a house. Mary (Hoffman) Gassen kept school kids during the week to make a living, took in renters and cooked for them. Also cleaned the church (Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Okarche) and the rectory, cooked and did laundry and ironing for Father Steber."

They had the following children:

F i Mary Elizabeth "Marie" Gassen
M ii Joseph John "Joe" Gassen [image] 1, 2 was born 3, 4 on 19 Mar 1923 in Okarche, Canadian / Kingfisher co, OK. He died 5, 6 on 3 Nov 1944 in Holland and was buried 7 in Flanders Field; Henri-Chappel Cem; Belgium.

F.M. "Pete" Hommertzheim has it that Joseph was with the " Com 413th Inf, 104th Inf. Div."; "Died in Holland", I'm assuming Joseph's death was directly related to WWII.

"When the war started, Joe was a student at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Since he was the only male in the household he was exempt from the service; but he felt it was his duty and wanted to go. He
was in the 413rd Infantry Regiment, 104th Infantry Division. Lester Hale", Joe's brother-in-law, "took him to the train station in El Reno, Oklahoma. When he left, he told Lester that he knew he would not be coming back home. He was killed on Nov 3rd, 1944 in Holland. He was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously and is buried at Flanders Field, Henri-Chappel cemetery in Belgium, 8 miles from the German border: Plot A, Row 4, Grave 33."
(from Pat 'Hale' Wilson)
! "The following is an exerpt from a letter written to Mary (Hoffman) Gassen, Joe's mother. It came from a friend of Joe's who was in the same division and was with him the night he was killed":
Halle, Germany
6 June, 1945
Dear Mrs. Gassen,
"............censorship has been lifted and I am free to tell you the things you want to know.
As much as I hate to relate details of death I feel it my duty to let you know the facts involving Joe's death.........I believe it was around the 5th or 6th of Nov, 1944 that we moved out from reserve into the attack. Our job was to cross a canal...and take various objectives on the other side.We moved up at dark and under the cover of an artillery barrage we moved up to the canal levee and dug foxholes and positions for our mortars. All the time we were digging in, we were under constant shelling by enemy mortars, but we ducked in our foxholes and prayed while the shrapnel flew over. During lulls in shelling we resumed our work. The enemy was overshooting us from 50 to a hundred yards so while we stayed down, we were fairly safe..........when everything became relatively quiet, we received orders to move out. We all jumped out of our holes and were marching down the side of the levee to a place where the engineers had put a footbridge across the canal. It was dark and everyone was stumbling. We had only gotten fifty yards from our holes when two enemy mortar shells hit within five feet of
our section and exploded. Everyone was knocked flat from concussion. When I got up, I noticed the man in front of me was wounded. He was scared so I found a hole and got him in. Then I went up the line and my eyes filled
with tears to see the wounded men of our section. When I got to Joe, he wasn't dead. He told me he was hit bad, but he didn't seem to be suffering too much. There were seven altogether wounded or dead. The medics came
then so we turned the job over to them and moved on across the canal, leaving our beloved buddies behind. The next day we received word that five of the seven had died. To the best of my knowledge, Joe didn't suffer much
pain before he passed........he was buried in the U.S. cemetery in Belgium................"
