Christian Gassen, along with his wife, children, and possibly other family members, came from Germany to the United States in 1882; settled in Arcadia, Carroll county, Iowa; from Iowa, the family moved to, Oklahoma.
(from my father, F.M."Pete"Hommertzheim; grandson of Christian & Margaretha 'Theisen' Gassen)

Marie (Gassen) Hale, granddaughter of Christian, says the family immigrated from Kresberg, Province of Rhine, Germany.
(from Pat 'Hale' Wilson)

* Anna Margaretha Theisen [image] 1, 2, 3, 4 was born 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 on 13 Aug 1849 in Cologne, Germany. Kathryn Rose (Gassen) McCall remembers that her grandmother, Margaretha (Theisen) Gassen, was always called Grossmutter by her grandchildren;
"She never remembered her being called anything, but Grossmutter by her grandchildren." --- "Grossmutter spoke German and would very rarely speak an English word."
(from Kathryn's son, Sherwood "Buddy" McCall)

Marie (Gassen) Hale related the following to her daughter, Pat (Hale) Wilson;
Marie and her 1st cousin, Marie Genevieve Gassen (daughter of "Matt" & Mathilda 'Sigl' Gassen) lived in the country; since their grandmother, Margaretha, lived in town, (Okarche, OK) the girls "lived with her during the week so they would be close to school."
Margaretha was "very strict" and Marie recalls one time when they "laughed during prayer" and Margaretha "made them kneel on a board and say the rosary."
After the death of Marie's father, Barth Gassen, Marie, her mother, Mary, and her brother Joe, made their home with Margaretha until Mary was able to buy a home of her own in Okarche, OK.

Certificate of Death has maiden name spelled, "Theisen". Information given by son, John Gassen, of Okarche, Canadian co, Oklahoma. In 1936, shown to have been a resident of Okarche Oklahoma for 20 years; however, family information has it that her husband, Christian Gassen, died in Okarche in 1906.
Margaritha died at her home in Okarche, Canadian co, Oklahoma on 24 Jan 1936; 3:00pm; attending physician, M. [Neuman]; cause of death is listed as "intestinal obstruction", date of onset, 16 Jan 1936; other contributory causes: carcinoma of left colon. No autopsy was performed;

Minnie's (Sister Walburga's) nephew, F. M. "Pete" Hommertzheim , says she was born on the ship when the family was coming to America; however, I believe this might be incorrect, as the 1885 census for Carroll co, Iowa shows her born in Iowa.
In 1899, Minnie Gassen became "Sister Mary Walburga" of the Order of Saint Benedict (O.S.B.), Catholic Sisters;
