"William Henderson was a son of Samuel and Elizabeth Henderson. Mrs Henderson, before her marriage, was a Williams. He was probably born in Hanover co, VA and removed with his parents to Granville co, NC about 1745. In recognition of distinguished services rendered to the crown, King George had granted the Hendersons a large tract of land on the south side of the river near Grindal Shboals. These lands were inherited by William Henderson. Three of his sisters, with their husbands, settled on the Henderson grant prior to the Revolution, viz: Mrs. "Jack" Beckham, Mrs Joab Mitchel and Mrs Adam Potter. "

The following first-hand account of the battle was written by Washington County, Virginia Militiaman Benjamin Sharp, and published in the American Pioneer in Feb 1843:
"The battle closed not far from sundown, so that we had to encamp on the ground, with the dead and wounded, ---." --- "The next day, as soon as we could bury our dead, and provide litters to carry our wounded, we marched off to regain the upper country ---."That afternoon we met Capt. NEIL coming on with his detachment, and encamped for the night on a large deserted Tory plantation, ------. Here, the next morning, we buried Col. Williams, who had died of his wounds on the march the day before."
