On 26 June 1855, Newton county, Missouri, Lewis Mitchell applied for a pension.
State of Missouri, County of Newton. On this 26th day of June one thousand eight hundred and fifty five personally appeared before me John D. Templeton, Clerk of the Circuit Court for Newton County and State aforesaid duly authorized to administer oaths within and for said County and State aforesaid; Lewis Mitchell aged sixty two years, a resident of McDonnal County in the State of Missouri who being duly sworn according to law declares that he is the identical Lewis Mitchell who voullulnteered as a private under the command of Lieuts. James Grayham, Issac Dickarson, Ensigns William and Patarick Ewen and Mathias Hines in Lee County State of Virginia in the fall of 1812 as well as he can now recollect went to torfolk in the state of Virginia. When he arrived there he was attached to a company commanded by Capt. Hill the Regiment he cannot recollect. He served in the war with Great Britain declared by the United States 18 June 1812 for the term of six months or Craney Island. Continued in actual service the time stated and was honorably discharged on Craney Island in the Spring of 1813. He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which he may be entitled under the act granting additional bounty land to certain Officers and soldiers who may have engaged in the military service of the United States approved March the 3rd, 1855 And refers to his former declaration made under act of Congress 28th Sept. 1850 upon which he obtained a land warrant - Number not recollected - for 80 acres which he having legally transferred and disposed of is not within his power now to return. He further declares that he has not received a warrant for bounty land for his serviced under any other act of Congress nor made any application therefor that the one above referred to under act of Congress 28th Sept 1850 upon which he obtained the said land warrant for 80 and the one now presented. He further states his service was proved by the affidavit of William Marshall and Abraham Crabtree he thinks, when he obtained his warrant for 80 acres which two men had served in the company with him.

"This Indenture made this seventh day of July in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty five by and between Lewis Mitchell of the County of McDonald and State of Missouri of the first part and the citizens of the second school district in Township twenty three and range thirty of the County and State aforesaid of the other part, Witnesseth, that the said Lewis Mitchell for and consideration of the sum of five dollars to him in hand paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, hath granted, bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell unto the trusstees and citizens of said school district a certain parcel of land lying and being in said county for the purpose of erecting a school house thereon in said second district, said parcel of land beginning on the north east corner of the ---th east quarter of the southeast quarter in section sixteen, township twenty-three, range thirty, running due south forty yards thence west forty yards thence north forty yards thence east forty yards to the beginning containing 1600 square yardss be the same more or less, with all and singular the hereditaments and appurtenances thereunto belonging or in anywise appertaining and all the estate, right, title, interest, claim, and demand whatever of him the said Lewis Mitchell of in and to the said land and premises and every part and parcel thereof. The said Trustees and Citizens of said district and their successors to have and to hold the said land and premises before mentioned to the only proper use and behoof of the trustees and citizens of said district for the end and purpose only before named forever. and the said Lewis Mitchell for himself and his heirs the said land and premises and every part and parcel thereof against himself and his heirs and all and every other person whatsoever will arrant and forever defend to the said trustees and citizens of said second district and their successors. In witness whereof the said Lewis Mitchell has hereunto set his hand and seal the date above written.

"Death of Ozro Mitchell;
Well known pioneer of this section, passed away Sunday night. Ozro Mitchell, one of the pioneers of this state died Sunday night, in this city. Mr Mitchell was a native of Tennessee, aged 75 years, and has resided in this state over 50 years. For many years past he has resided on his ranch, a large body of land lying near Tagus Switch. He was unmarried, and had no relatives so far as known, except his brother, Adolphus Mitchell, who resided with him. He was a very successful man in business affairs, farming and stock raising being his principal pursuits. He was of something of a mechanical turn of mind, and made a number of violins, which experts have pronounced to be of a very fine quality. The funeral services will be held this morning at 10 o'clock, at the Brooks Undertaking parlors, after which the body will be taken to Tulare for interment, in the cemetery in that city."

Dear Brother and Family,
By request of Uncle Adophus Mitchell, I write this to inform you of Uncle Ozro's death, particulars of which you will learn from enclosed clipping. He was taken seriously ill Thursday, (Thanksgiving Day), with kidney trouble, and passed away the following Sunday night. I left the City for Visalia, Sunday morning and only reached there a few hours before the end came. He suffered intensely and was unconscious almost from the first. We are all as well as usual and sincerely trust this may find you and yours enjoying good health.
