At the breaking out of the war he enlisted in Company C of the Seventh Georgia Battalion, was later transferred to the Sixty-first Georgia Infantry, and gave long and faithful service as a soldier in the army of North Virginia. . He escaped capture and was with his regiment until the close of the war, when he came home and took up farming. ----- he also devoted much of his time and energies to his duties as a local preacher of the Methodist church."
