"John Davis came to this country from Wales about 1775; he fought in the war for Independence under General Marion and was granted 640 acres of land for this service. This land located in Washington County, (now TN);
He was at the Battle of King's Mountain, SC, 7 October 1780, when his oldest son Wm is said to have been born;
He and his wife, Elizabeth, were parents of seven children, four daughters and three sons."

William B. Davis [Parents] [image] 1, 2 was born 3, 4 on 6 Mar 1827 in Hawkins co, TN. He died 5 after 28 Feb 1902 in [TN]. William married 6 Sarah Mitchell on 18 Jan 1850.

According to Steve Davis, gg grandson of William B. Davis;
Wm. was a Major in the Union Army during the Civil War; a State Senator and an Indian Agent for the Cherokee Nation, appointed by the President.
In Major William B. Davis' own words, he writes in a letter dated 28 Feb 1902,
"On March 4, 1848 was elected clerk of the circuit court of my county. Served three terms of 4 years each, read law and qualified to practice. Went into the USArmy as 1st. Lt. and was promoted to Major in 1864 and mustered out in 1865, was then appointed US Indian Agent and went on the frontier, came back in 1869 and practiced law until 1890. Was elected to the State Senate seat from Andrew Johnsons old district, served the term again and then practiced law up to 1900 and was then elected to the State Senate from the 3rd District which office I now hold. All of these offices I have never been an applicant for any position."
In this same letter, he states that his mother was a Baldwin and that his family consisted of four boys and four girls;
William was also the father of eight children, four boys and four girls.

1860 Census for Hancock co, TN; Shows Jessee B. Mitchell as head of household (HH); Occupation listed as farmer;
Also in household (hh) is presumably his brother Robert and Mary A. Mitchell. Jesse is reported to have had a sister named Mary (middle initial not given, who is not shown in the hh of their father for 1860) who was about the same age as this Mary; however, Jesse B. Mitchell is also reported to have married a Mary Emily Fairchild; although, the middle initial is different I suppose this Mary to be his wife, as she and Jesse B. are shown on census to have both been married within the year. This Mary age 19 and the Robert Mitchell, age 17, in hh are also shown to have been in school during the past year.

The following description for the location of the Mitchell Cemetery is given in the book "Families of Hawkins County Tennessee; 1786 - 1994", pg 382; " in Hancock Co (TN) on Clinch River near the mouth of Panther Creek on the north side, which was the old Mitchell farm."
The Mitchell Cemetery is on private property, I was allowed to visit the cemetery on 2 Aug 2008. Though completely overgrown and neglected there are a few headstones visible; however, I was able to read only two of them; that of J.B. Mitchell, the other for his wife, Mary E..

Mary Emily or Evaline Fairchild 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 was born 6, 7, 8, 9 on 23 Jan 1840 in TN. She died 10, 11, 12 on 17 Feb 1891 and was buried 13 in Mitchell Cem; Hancock co, TN. Mary married 14, 15 Jesse Braughten Mitchell (Dr.) on 20 Nov 1860 in [TN].
