Between Cedar Plains west of Falkville and Trmble in Cullman Co AL. Is a
route called Speegle Blaze. On one of her many mission of mercy,
Winifred Cranford Speegle courageously braved the thick woods and roving
wild animals to blaze a trail along this route. To help the wilderness
dwellers in their tmes of need and sicknsss. With the coming of the Civil War.
The Speegle family felt the tragedy in a way known only to those who had sons
fighting on both sides. Three of David and Winifred sons served in the Union Army.
While two fought wth the Confederacy. Union Army : Carroll K. Speegle,
David H. Speegle and Thomas C. Speegle. Confederate Army John C. Speegle and
Daniel Martin Speegle. Daniel Martin Speegle was the only one to come home
Two who served with the Union died south of Nashville TN. and the two who were with
the Confederacy were killed between Vicksburg and Jackson Miss. after
the terribe siege of the river port. There were two son-in-laws that also died during the war
David and Winifred are buried at Brushy Creek AL. Most of these Speegles were
in Morgan, Cullman and Winston Counties in AL.
