THE HOLT FAMILIES OF SHELBY COUNTY, TEXAS

It has been stated that the Holt name could not be German.  From Germany to Virginia, the "d" and "t" letters were often interchanged.  This was the case with Michael Holt in Virginia whose name in Germany was HOLD.  Some of his ancestry in Germany was traced out by Zimmerman and Cerny and reported in the "Before Germanna" monographs.  Jimmy Veal, a descendant, had a professional researcher in Germany repeat the research with the result that two names in the Michael Holt ancestry were misspelled.  Warren Holt Talley, another descendant, wanting to verify the Veal report, obtained the microfilm and, from his own reading and that of his German sister-in-law, supports the Veal finding.    According to the writings of ELAINE BAILEY, the brothers JOHN, JOSEPH and WILLIAM HOLT immigrated to the United States from London, England about 1665.  This is not to state they were English, but they probably came to England from Germany.  They landed at Hogg Island, Virginia.  John settled in Virginia.  Joseph and William migrated to other states.  The name of John Holt's first wife is unknown.

1. Michael Holt 02/05/1690 -

1.  MICHAEL HOLT, son of John Holt, was born on February 5, 1690 in Culpepper County, Virginia.  He married ELIZABETH BUTLER in 1712 in Culpepper County, Virginia.   Michael Holt died in November, 1767 at Alamance County, North Carolina.

Michael Holt's will dated June 30, 1767 probated November 1767 leaves property to Wife, Elizabeth, Son Peter, "My Children" (Names and number not stated).   Executors: Sons Michael, Jr. and Nicholas---  Witnesses: John Butler and William Carlisle.

a.  MICHAEL HOLT, JR., first child of Michael and Elizabeth Butler, May 6, 1723 in Culpepper County Virginia.  He married first MARY O'NEILL.  He was a revolutionary character.  He moved to Alamance, Orange County, North Carolina about 1740.  He was a Captain of The County Militia against Regulators and was captured and held prisoner. Michael Holt, Jr. died in 1799 in Alamance County North Carolina.

In his will dated January 23, 1799--proved August 1799 "
Leaves property to 2nd wife Jean- Children by 1st wife Joseph Holt, Margaret Holt Powell and Elizabeth Holt Smith.  Children by 2nd wife Jean-  Sarah Holt Hardin, Joshua Holt, Isaac Holt, Mary Holt Tompson, Catherine Holt, Michael Holt, III, and William Holt."  Peggy Holt Turrentine and Nancy Holt Finley are not mentioned.   Executors wife, Jean, Sons; Isaac and Joshua.  Witness John Scott, William Rainey, John Holt.

4)  SARAH HOLT, child of Michael and Jean Holt, was born in 1769.   She married JOHN HARDIN.  To this union ANN HOLT HARDIN and SARAH HARDIN were born were.

5)  JOSHUA HOLT, child of Michael and Jean Holt, was born in 1771. He married NETTIE BURROWS.  They moved to Tennessee.

6)  ISAAC LOCKHART HOLT, child of Michael and Jean Holt, was bon September 21, 1773 in Alamance County North Carolina.  He married lst LETTIE SCOTT in 1793 in Orange County North Carolina.   To this union JACOB HOLT, born 1799, MARTHA HOLT, born 1805, MICHAEL HOLT, born 1807 and SAMUEL HOLT born 1809.  He married 2nd time MARY BLAIR. 

9)  MICHAEL HOLT, III, child of Michael and Jean Holt, was born July 11, 1778.   He married RACHEL RAINEY in Alamance County, North Carolina.  To this union WILLIAM RAINEY HOLT, NANCY HOLT, JANE HOLT and EDWIN HOLT  were born.

b. NICHOLAS HOLT, second child of Michael and Elizabeth Butler Holt, was born in March, 1725 in Culpepper County, Virginia.  He married EVA WILLHEITE.  Nicholas died in 1787.

  1)  JOHN HOLT, first child of Nicholas and Eva Holt. was born in 1767.  John married  SARAH FULLER who was born in 1775.   John and Sarah lived in Granville County, North Carolina.  They later moved to Laurens County, South Carolina.
