B. W. RaymondBenjamin W. 381, son of Benjamin 204, went to Chicago, Ill., in ·
1836 as a merchant. He was twice Mayor of the city, and nominated ·
a third time by both parties. During his term he devoted ·
the whole of his salary to alleviating the distress of laborers. "He ·
inaugurated the system of wide streets, and secured Dearborn (or ·
the Lake front) Park as a gift to Chicago." "To his influence ·
chiefly the public probably owed the old Galena Railroad—the ·
first in Illinois." He erected the first woolen mill in the State. ·
He was President of the Chicago Board of Trade, of the Fox ·
River and Wisconsin Central Railroad, of the Elgin National ·
Watch Co., and, for seven years, of the Board of Trustees of Lake ·
Forest University (Presbyterian), as well as incorporator and trustee ·
in many other commercial, benevolent, and educational institutions. ·
"He was always foremost in any work which was generous, ·
