WAR RECORDS OF MASSACHUSETTS.

All these military records, excepting the first, are taken exclusively from the military records of the States of Massachusetts and Connecticut, and include all of the name of Raymond found therein. They apply only to the troops when under State control, excepting, perhaps, the "Roll of the Continental Army" found herein among those of Massachusetts. By far the most important records relating to the soldiers from both these States in the wars of the Revolution and of 1812 are to be found in the archives at Washington.

LEXINGTON ALARM ROLL OF APRIL 19, 1775.

Before this time the towns throughout the commonwealth had organized, equipped, and drilled their militia, to be ready to march against the British at the call of their provincial leaders. In March, 1775, a British armed force had invaded Essex County to seize stores at Danvers, and now, no sooner had British troops begun their march to seize stores at Concord, than messengers on horseback were sent in every direction with orders for the minute-men to march against the enemy. On their way to Concord the British fought at Lexington, and after committing atrocious acts, marched onward to Concord. The War for Independence was now inaugurated. On their return their movement was highly accelerated by the shotguns of the patriots from behind the walls and from the forests that bordered their line of march.
