but left it in his Sophomore year, and graduated at Union ·
College. In 1850 he helped establish Rochester University, and ·
five years later, accepting the presidency, he organized the Polytechnic ·
Institute of Brooklyn, one of the best educational institutions ·
in the country. He accompanied Henry Ward Beecher to ·
Europe in 1863, and helped him fight the battle of the Union ·
against English prejudice. The following year he was appointed ·
[87]President of Vassar College, which was then a mere chaotic purpose ·
in the mind of its founder, Matthew Vassar, and in this office ·
organized the first woman's college in the world. To this institution ·
he devoted fourteen years of faithful and invaluable service, ·
