I speculate that "John C, Phillips" may have been "John Calvin Phillips". If so, he later went by the name "Calvin Phillips". Land records appear to show Calvin's name as "Calvin J. Phillips". Also, it seems possible that someone has mistakenly attached the children of "Branson (Bronsom) Phillips" to "John C, Phillips".

==================================
We are descended from Calvin Phillips. The place of his birth is questionable - North Carolina, South Carolina or Tennessee are all mentioned as birth places for him. He was most likely born in 1823. For what it is worth, my father told a story about an old Indian grandfather who came to visit them when he was a small boy "on the reservation". Dad described the old man as looking like an Indian - toothless, with a bad scar across one cheek and part of an ear missing. He did not like to be indoors and took my father for long walks in the woods. Dad said the old man "ate tobacco" - he would send my father to the barn to get him a tobacco leaf, which he then rolled up and started eating. Dad said he never saw the old man spit anything out. I am assuming that this old man was Calvin Philliips. We don't know what happened to him but he probably died in Oklahoma sometime after 1900. We do not know where he is buried. One family record shows him as a Confederate veteran but I have not found proof of his service.

Hi Paula - Ray Phillips forwarded your e-mail to me. I've been searching for Alice Jane Phillips, your George's sister, for quite awhile. Didn't have much luck but I was looking for her under her nickname, Jennie. Wish they wouldn't do that to us. Anyway, I wanted to tell you I have a copy of George and Sarah's marriage license which I can email to you if you don't already have it plus a copy of a delayed birth certificate for their son, Burrell Washington Phillips. I went to the Cooke Co. courthouse one day, looking for whatever I could find on the Phillips family, and came back with a few marriage licenses:
James S. Phillips & Nancy E. Turner (George's brother)
Milly Phillips & Jasper N. Tyner ( sister of George and Sarah's brother, if I remember right)
Miss A.J. (Alice Jane) Phillips & Lee White (George's sister)
These can be e-mailed to you but Burrell's birth certificate is on legal size paper and my scanner won't scan paper that size. But I could snail mail you a copy.
How do you descend from George & Sarah? I'm not a direct descendant of the Phillips' but Alice's second marriage was to a Clark and their daughter married into my family.
By the way, none of the Phillips family is buried in Cooke Co. which probably means they all moved to Indian Territory sometime after Alice's first marriage in Mar. 1882. Alice's 2nd daughter by Lee White was born in Tahlequah, I.T. in Apr. 1887. Alice married James Clark in Nov. 1889 in Coal Co. I.T. and James S. Phillips and his family were on the 1890 Indian Territory census with a non-citizen permit, so that narrows the date of the move somewhat. James' middle name was Shadrick which was his grandfather Reddick's given name.
Hope you find a lot of info in OK and would appreciate your sharing it with me.
Jan
