Ross Wade Phillips
Ross Phillips was the father of Barbara Lou Phillips.
The attached sketch is an attempt to show Ross as I remember him, in the late 1950's, when he was in his forties. Ross was a slender man. He looked taller than he actually was, due to his slim build. He had dark brown hair and twinkling blue eyes. His features were rugged, with pronounced cheekbones, an angular jawline and a strong chin. His skin was tanned and weathered from working out of doors in the hot Texas sun. He had a large nose, with a bend in it. His hair was always wind blown looking. He wore gray tinted glasses. His most noticeable feature was his smile. It seemed that Ross always had a smile on his face, even when he was angry.

Madison County Biography of: William R. Phillips
William R. PHILLIPS was born March 12, 1836, one-half mile south of
Huntsville, and is the only living child of eight born to James and
Patsey (SANDERS) PHILLIPS. The father was born February 27, 1805,
and was a son of John PHILLIPS, one of the early settlers of the
county.
James PHILLIPS was a native of Alabama, and came to this section
about 1830, becoming a very extensive land owner and dying here
August 17, 1874, well respected and esteemed. He served as treasurer
of the county one term, and in religion was a Methodist. His wife
was a native of Kentucky, and a sister of C. B. SANDERS [see
sketch], and after her death, in 1842, he wedded Elizabeth WILLIAMS,
who lived until March, 1862. His third marriage was to Mrs. Polly
JOHNSON.
William R. PHILLIPS remained with his father upon the farm until
about thirty years of age. During the war he served in different
companies on the Confederate army, at one time being lieutenant of
Reagan’s company. His whole term of service was from 1861 until
1865. He began farm life on his own account three miles below his
present place, which is situated two miles west of Huntsville, and
contains 300 acres of land. He also owns 123 acres in another farm.
He is a successful farmer, his land being partly very well improved,
and about 200 acres in a good state of cultivation. His whole
attention has been given to farming, with the exception of five
years spent in Huntsville in the mercantile business with W. A.
GAGE.
January 13, 1866, he married Eliza WILLIAMS, a native of Tennessee,
by whom he had five children: Mary M., Lulu M., Claude W., Annie and
Willie. He was left a widower about 1875, and the following year
married Lete WILSON, who was born in Washington County about 1845,
and also bore him five children: Burnice, Ettie, James E., Kellie,
George W. and Edith. Mr. PHILLIPS is an elder in the Cumberland
Presbyterian Church, of which his wife is an active member. He is a
Master Mason. In politics he is a Democrat, and as such was elected
county treasurer in 1880 and 1882." (Goodspeeds History of NW AR…)

Notes from Don Watson
...as for Wesley Hughes Callahan, I have found that he apparently married the widow of Rev. Daniel Rawls, Lovina. Lovina was first Lovina Pinrod who married Jessie William Lawhon. Jessie died in what is now Kendall County near Curry's Creek about 1855. Rev. Rawls was himself a widower and soon married the widow Lovina Lawhon. Rev. Rawls died in 1862 and Lovina married Wesley Callahan.

E-mail from Don Watson to Booby Rawls 6/2000
Hello Bobby,
I have not heard from you in a while...hope your research is going well. I
recently made contact with a descendant of Lovina PINROD LAWHON RAWLS and
Wesley Hughes CALLAHAN. Her family has two family Bibles with family data,
one of which is engraved with the name of "Alzada Callahan" on the cover.
Alzada was the daughter of Lovina and Wesley Callahan. These Bibles include
the data and marriages and children for Lovina PINROD. Since this data
includes a daughter for Lovina and Daniel RAWLS, I thought you might find
it useful. The bible records indicate that this daughter, Maria RAWLS and
her husband D. E. THOMPSON were witnesses to the marriage of Alzada
CALLAHAN to D. W. RILEY.
I have attached a small report to this email with the data included. I
have also copied this message to two other folks, Dalton R. Phillips, a
descendant of James Sanford CALLAHAN, brother to Wesley Hughes CALLAHAN;
and to Donna Durham, a descendant of Jesse LAWHON and Lovina PINROD through
their son John William LAWHON. There is contact information for me as well
as Yvonne Sageser whose family owns the above mentioned bibles.
Hope you find this useful....take care.
Don Watson
