In THE HISTORY OF BELL COUNTY, TEXAS by George W. Tyler, pp. 115-116,
mention is made of the beginnings of Belton, Texas, 'Mrs. Sarah Lawle r built
a large shed in which to board the men who were putting up the crud e houses.
The boards for this shed -- the first made for a roof in Nolanville - - were
rived by W. B. Cross, F. M. Cross and Simeon Odell.' 'Other improvem ents
followed soon, but these three structures, Paynes Store, Danley's Bla cksmith
Shop, and Mrs. Lawlers shed were probably the only houses up when the
election for the regular county officers occured on August 5, 1850.'
On 22 June 1969 in Belton, Texas, a Texas Historical Marker was dedic ated in
honor of Mrs. Sarah Crawson Lawler, widow of Eli Lawler, for whom th e first
building in Belton was erected. The marker is located at the site o f the
Belton City Hall. The inscription on the marker is as follows:

Lawler for who the first building in Belton was erected. In this buil ding

Nolanville, seat of government of the newly created Bell County. Tw o years
later the name of the County seat was changed to Belton.
Mrs. Lawler was born in Warren County, Tennessee, March 27, 1807. Sh e came
to Texas with her husband and four children in 1837.
This marker is a tribute from the decendants of the four Lawler child ren,

Your information is very helpful. I had seen some of it, but not all of it. I will check into it further, but I just want to send a quick reply to awknowledge receipt. Yes, it is quite possible that the Jessie Gooch who married Bessie Fannin was my grandfather. I have been trying to get more details about that. It is an interesting possibility that she may have died not long after they married. If that is the case, then he probably married again, to my mother's birth mother.
Thanks much for the info, and I will be back in touch after I analyze all this.

Could the Infant Son Gooch who died 13 Jul 1903 have been their child? If so, maybe Bessie died from complications arising from childbirth. Could your mother's mother have been Jesse's second wife?
