Thomas Gooch lived in Hanover County, Virginia as a young man. He later moved to Nansemond County, Virginia, to live on a plantation named "Summerton Home". Summerton Home bordered another plantation owned by Christopher Dudley. Christopher Dudley was probably the father or a brother of the wife of Thomas Gooch.
