Some Facts About the Family of J.G. Gooch

(Contributed by: Eddie Josey Wilson, 901 36th Street North, Great Falls, MT 59401)

Written by his daughter, Caldona Lee (Gooch) Howard.

My grandfather, Thomas Gooch and Lucinda Gillentine, his wife, lived in South Carolina. I have no record of the date of their births or marriage. They had four children, John Gillentine, Jesse, Nicholas, and Lucinda. They moved with their family from South Carolina to West Tennessee in 1823, and settled in the southwestern part in what is now McNairy County.

My father, John Gillentine Gooch, was born in South Carolina on October 15, 1809. He married
Louvina Brumbelow September 30, 1830. He purchased a small tract of land and built a two room house that year for their home. During the years that followed he land enough to make a plantation of sixteen hundred acres and built new additions from time to time, replacing the original log rooms chinked with clay and stick and clay chimney, with weather-boarded and ceiled rooms and brick chimneys where he lived until his death in August of 1885.

From early life he was inclined to serve the people of his county in a public way. He was elected Justice of the Peace in 1832 and re-elected successively for 53 years, being Notary Public during the tenure of office and Chairman of the County Court, which was held at Purdy near Bethel Springs and only a short distance from what is now Selmer, Tennessee, on the Mobile and Ohio Railroad.

There were nine children born to this union; names John, Thomas, Lucinda, Nicholas, Jesse, William, Andrew, Willy B. Terry, and Annie Louvenia. Nicholas died at the age of 15 months. Lucinda married James Dunaway and Annie Louvenia married James Grantham. Their mother died November 21, 1844.

Father married my mother, Nancy Adeline Rains, May 5, 1845. They had thirteen children; some of the names James Warren, Taylor, Henry Clay, Carroll Moore, Polly Elizabeth, Marian, Delphina, Lucy Caroline, Amanda Jane. Taylor, Marian, Delphina died during infancy. The others lived to become heads of families.

My fathers sister, Lucinda, married James Dunaway. His brothers Nicholas and Jesse married my mother's sisters, Polly and Lucinda Rains.

My husband was Pleasant Joseph Howard, born near Paris, Henry County, Tennessee. He volunteered quite young and served through the Civil War. He taught school after the war, and later became engaged in the retail grocery business. We were married February 18, 1886. We moved from Falcon, Tennessee to Benton, Ill. in 1890. Mr. Howard died November 5, 1905 at our home in Benton, Ill. We had three children; Clara, Carl Gooch, and Claudia, who died when she was 15 months old.

Our two surviving children, Clara Howard Clavenger and Carl Gooch Howard, are both teachers. Clara married Lewis Clavenger, who is also a teacher. They each have a Ph. D. degree from Cornell University at Ithaca, New York, and are members of the faculty of Northeast Missouri State Teachers College, Kirksville, MO. Carl Gooch Howard has a B.S. degree from the University of Ill., and a masters degree from the University of Wyoming. He is a member of the faculty of the New Mexico State College of Agriculture at Las Cruces, New Mexico.
