IN THE DAYS OF THE SIXTIES
Personal experiences of a Southern Girl in the days of war as told by MRS. NATHANIEL GOOCH, SR., (signed 1929 Margaret (Ridley) Gooch) charter member of Nashville Chapter No.1, U.D.C.
I was just a young girl when war came on between the States, and though I was not brought in contact with the harrowing scenes of battle and invasion, my experiences have been a vivid memory all these years, and it seems but as yesterday that we were all so deeply interested and excited over our dear ones going to war.
When my grandfather, Henry Ridley, of Rutherford County , Tenn., died, my father and mother went from Tennessee to Madison County, Miss., to a plantation which his father had bought and stocked with Negroes and mules.
Grandfather left a wife and eight children, of whom my father was next to
the eldest, and many responsibilities fell to his share. I was born on the
Mississippi plantation, June 30, 1847, and was left a motherless babe at the age of ten months. I was then sent, with my black mammy, to my grandmother to be reared in Tennessee; but there were frequent trips back to Mississippi to be with my father, who did not marry again for seven years. The first part of my education was at a country school in Rutherford County, called Stewart’s Creek Academy, and on of my schoolmates there was Sam Davis, now known as the boy here of Tennessee. I was later at school in Murfreesboro, where I lived with my aunt, Mrs. C. D. Huggins, who had several other girls boarding with her, one of whom was Maggie Davis, the oldest sister of Sam Davis. After three years there, I wanted to go to school in Franklin, so as to be with my mother’s people, the McEwen family, and I was there at school
when war was declared. Company D, under Captain Hanner, of the 1st Tennessee Volunteers, was organized there. Col. Hume Field commanded the regiment; and this was the regiment with which Sam Davis enlisted and served until he was transferred to the dangerous duties of a scout. There was a great excitement in Franklin over the boys leaving for the war. The ladies of the town gathered in church and made clothes for the soldiers, while the young girls waited on them. I shall never forget the morning this company left, with everybody at the station kissing and crying. I had an uncle, Jimmy McHewen, a double cousin, Christopher Henry Ridley (who seemed like a brother, his mother and mine being twins and having married brothers), and many friends in the company whom I never saw again.
My father, Samuel Jones Ridley, came up to see his mother before going into the army, and took me back to Mississippi with him, fearing that he might not get back again - which he never did. I was placed in school at Canton, and he went into camp as Captain of Company A, Withoers’ Artillery, the 1st Mississippi Regiment. He came home occasionally until he was killed at Baker’s Creek, sixty miles away, the last battle before the siege of Vicksburg. We could hear the guns of the battle, and our hearts were full of fear for the safety of one who was directing the fire of some of these guns - and the sad news came all too soon. It seems that at a critical point in the battle, my father had sent his men back, and they thought he was with them, but he stayed with his guns and fought them himself. When the old negro, Burrell, who had gone with father into the army saw the men of his battalion, he began to ask "whar Mars Jones" was, and no one could tell him;

Elizabeth Gooch (1754 - 1830)
Married William Kimbrough.
The Kimbroughs were the first family to come to middle Tennessee, settling in Davidson County, Tennessee December 27, 1797, on a 200 acre tract of land. In 1779, an additional 250 acres of land was purchased nearby by William Kimbrough. The land of the Kimbroughs was located in newly formed Rutherford County, when it was formed 25 October, 1803. Thus, the Kimbroughs were among the first settlers of Rutherford County.
William and Elizabeth (Gooch) Kimbrough were charter members of the Rock Springs Baptist Church, which was located about a mile south of their home. In 1832, that Church was changed to a Church of Christ. The Kimbroughs moved to another Baptist Church nearby. Their descendants are Baptists, Methodists and Presbyterians.
The Kimbrough name was later shortened to Kimbro.
