Tillman Gooch (1797 - 1870)
02/17/96
It is known that both William and Tillman Gooch (assumed to be brothers) settled in northeastern Mississippi in the middle or late 1830's, and lived on adjoining farms there.
Tillman Gooch shown in the 1830 Census Index for Rabun County, GA:
age 20-30
1 female 20-30 (wife)
1 male 5-10
1 male under 5
1 female under 5
This report shows a young family, with 3 young children.
Tillman Gooch is shown in the 1840 Census Index for Tishomingo County, MS:
age 30-40 occupation farmer
1 female 20-30 (wife)
1 male 20-30
1 male under 5
This report is confusing. It seems to indicate that Tillman Gooch may have lost his family between 1830-1840. The 20-30 year old couple were probably not his children; they may have been living with him, and the young child may have been theirs.
Tillman Gooch may have died between 1840 and 1850.
05/97 new information received indicates that Tillman Gooch served as a Justice of the Peace in Corinth, MS from about 1840 to 1842.
08/23/97 new information received from J. Cecil Daniels, publisher of the Gooch Newsletter in Macon, GA.;
"Here's you a good story. Tillman came to GA before 1830. He and
wife Eliz. sold property in SC in 1824. In 1830 Census, Rabun Co.
Ga. Moved to Dahlonega (GoldRush), Sold Gold Lot 1836 ? (not sure of date). Winter of 1838-39 hewas Capt. in GA Militia, and went on drive to remove Indians from SE, called Trail of Tears. He never returned nor got in touch with his family again. Tillman left a wife and 6 children without providing support. Tillman is mentioned along with his mother in his grandfather Kelly's will. I found, as you have, Tillman living near your William; and I agree they must be close kin. It appears that Tillman is living with a young couple who have a 5
year old son. I have had reported that Tillman was listed as a Justice of Peace as late as 1843. Looking through marriage records I found Tillman married a Mrs. Nancy Miller 15 Apr. 1850, Sutter co. CA. In the census he is listed
with two other men (not Gooch), all listed as miners."
Family record updated to show three children born after 1830, gender not known.

DEATH: MO, Lafayette Co., Lexington; Letter from Martha Gooch, niec e of John, to her brother Benjamin Franklin Gooch, dated 24 July, 190 0,copied into his journal; copy made by Ruth Crowson, in possession o f Dayna Jacobs:
"The two girls married two brothers Abe and Wilson Owen in North Caro lina and moved to MO and grandmother Gooch came there with them to MO , and died at Lexington, MO."
TO DO: Find probate records for Mary Gooch in Lexington, and cemeter y records. Find her daughters (married to Abel and Wilson Owens).
There is a James Rice on the 1810 census for Buncombe Co., and als o a James Rice who witnessed the twins' signatures on deeds dated i n 1817 in Missouri. This is probably not the "cousin Jim Rice" that s ome descendants of Benjamin refer to, stating that Benjamin and hi s cousin Jim were good friends, because he would have been much olde r than Benjamin. However, it is possible that his brother Joseph's s on James was "cousin Jim Rice." My theory is that these Rice brother s had a sister named Mary who was the mother of the twins.
