11/23/96 INFORMATION PROVIDED BY BARB ANDREWS

William Thomas Gooch was a son of William Elijah Gooch and S. Jane Elizabeth (Davis) Gooch. By what is known, he died at the age of 29, in Lamar County, TX. He had three children, still being researched.
=================================
Chuck,

Your information is very helpful. I had seen some of it, but not all of it. I will check into it further, but I just want to send a quick reply to awknowledge receipt. Yes, it is quite possible that the Jessie Gooch who married Bessie Fannin was my grandfather. I have been trying to get more details about that. It is an interesting possibility that she may have died not long after they married. If that is the case, then he probably married again, to my mother's birth mother.

Thanks much for the info, and I will be back in touch after I analyze all this.

God bless/
Ray

Could the Infant Son Gooch who died 13 Jul 1903 have been their child? If so, maybe Bessie died from complications arising from childbirth. Could your mother's mother have been Jesse's second wife?

General Notes: Husband - William W. Gooch

William Gooch (1729 - 1802)

This person seems to be the start of our family tree; at least for documentation purposes.

Information on this William Gooch taken from the Hightower Family Data Base on the INTERNET. It seems that he was born in Hanover County, Virginia, which is situated just north of Richmond.

02/16/96 - New information received from Anthony Rockefeller via America On Line, who has compliled a large database on the GOOCH FAMILY:

William Gooch was a farmer, probably raising tobacco. It seems that he was a very prosperous man, and he was probably an affluent person, especially in North Carolina.

William Gooch first married Keziah Ann Hart. They had five children together. Their children are recorded as being born in Hanover County, VA. She died sometime after 1760.

It seems that William Gooch moved to Caswell County, North Carolina after his wife, Keziah, died, in the early or middle 1760's. He may have lived briefly in Granville County, North Carolina, before moving to Caswell County.

William Gooch then married again, to Francis Rice. It is not clear whether they married in Virginia or North Carolina. They had seven children together. The children are all recorded as being born in Caswell County, North Carolina. William Gooch lived with Francis until he died in 1802. He is buried in Caswell County, North Carolina.

William Gooch had a total of 12 children.

William Gooch apparently sold land in Louisa County, Virginia between 1742 and 1752. The entry appears in Louisa County, Virginia - Deed Books A & B, page 9. It is not dated, and there is no mention of a wife. (This entry may have involved the father of this William Gooch). In the same book, there is another entry dated January 28, 1755. In this entry, William Gooch sold a parcel of land, with the consent of his wife, Keziah.

William Gooch served in the Revolutionary War: Taylor's Company, 6th Reg. Roll of Lt. Col. Moban's Company of 1st North Carolina Battalion commanded by Col. Thomas Clark; Hogg's Co. Pt. He served in the army for several years, and was a private soldier. It appears that his service may have started as early as about 1775, and may have ended in late 1779. SOURCES: Military Roster and Soldiers published by the Tennessee Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, 1960-1970, compiled by Edythe Whitley (Mrs. Albert Boyd); North Carolina State and Colonial Records, Vol. 15, P. 725, Vol. 16, P. 1062, Vol. 17, P. 213 & 381.

The estate records and documents for William Gooch in North Carolina are in Box Number 29, Call Number C.R. 020.508 (1)-(106) in the North Carolina Department of Archives and History, Raleigh, North Carolina.

On April 25, 1794, William Gooch, Sr. sold 200 acres of land located on Country Line Creek adjoining Wm. Kimbrough, James Rice, and Widow Martin. The land was sold to John Payne. SOURCE: Caswell County, North Carolina, Deed Book H, P. 354-355.

On March 2, 1801, William Gooch, Sr., sold 30 acres of land on the South Fork of Country Line Creek adjoining Nathan Salde and Estes' own Land. The land was sold to Richard Estes, Sr. SOURCE: Caswell County, North Carolina, Deed Book M, P. 113.

By November 10, 1801, William Gooch had given to his sons 1,123 acres of land, and he had sold 230 acres of land. This totals 1,353 acres of land that he gave away or sold in North Carolina.

On April 28, 1803, the Executors of the Estate of William Gooch, Sr., deceased, William Gooch, Jr. and David Gooch, sold 199 acres of land to Malachi Hollaman. Mr. Hollaman had purchased the land for 91 pounds, 5 shillings at the estate sale for William Gooch, Sr., held on February 5, 1803. The Estate Sale papers are filed at the North Carolina Department of Archives, under Caswell County, North Carolina, Original Wills, 1772-1941, (C.R. 20.508.29), William Gooch, 1803.

03/10/96 - Additional information received from Elizabeth Palmer in Houston, Texas. She sent a copy of the Williamson County (Tennessee) Historical Society Journal Number 10, published in the spring of 1979. It contains an article titled "The Gooch Family In Williamson County, Tennessee" which was written by Virginia Gooch Watson (Mrs. George F. Watson). It gives a detailed accounting of what happened when seven of the children of William Gooch, Sr. migrated to middle Tennessee from the late 1790's until the middle 1810's, with information about some of their descendants, up to 1979.

02/07/97 - Additional information received from Tonia Moore in Prospect, Tennessee, contains the words from the will of William Gooch written in about 1801, and entered into probate in 1809 in Caswell County, North Carolina.

08/23/97 new information received from J. Cecil Daniels, publisher of the Gooch Newsletter.

In an article written in the Jul - Sep, 1992 edition of the Gooch Newsletter, Mr. Daniels refers to William Gooch as "the Rev. and War Patriot William Gooch of Caswell County, NC".
