The Family History Files of Dalton Ray Phillips

CALLAHAN, GOOCH & PHILLIPS FAMILY LINES IN ARKANSAS, OKLAHOMA & TEXAS

Welcome!

This website is about the genealogies of the Callahan, Gooch and Phillips family lines. You will will need a high speed broadband internet connection to enjoy it, as it is graphics intensive.

Many hours of work have been put into the research and documentation of the people listed on these pages. I would like to thank everyone who helped me with my family history research since I started this project in 1995.

The original version of the website contains most of the information files for the various family lines.  Some of these files go back to the 1990's but I have tried to keep it updated. You can access it by following this link:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rayphill/indexold.htm

I believe this new version of the family tree will let you find pertinent information faster. I am including all of my general notes, which I have not made public before. I hope you will benefit from the information presented here. Happy hunting!

Always think positive.

Almost everything has a positive side. A little change in the way you think can make a big difference in your life.

"PRESS ON: NOTHING IN THE WORLD CAN TAKE THE PLACE OF PERSISTENCE. TALENT WILL NOT; NOTHING IS MORE COMMON THAN UNSUCCESSFUL MEN WITH TALENT. GENIUS WILL NOT; UNREWARDED GENIUS IS ALMOST A PROVERB. EDUCATION ALONE WILL NOT; THE WORLD IS FULL OF EDUCATED DERELICTS. PERSISTENCE AND DETERMINATION ALONE ARE OMNIPOTENT." - Calvin Coolidge

This also gives me an opportunity to showcase some of my pencil art. I am a drawer of pictures. It is not quite good enough to be called real art but it is better than doodling.

When I was a boy, I drew all of the time. But just men's heads. nothing else - just the components of the head, usually from a 3/4 profile view. No necks, no collars, no ties. Heads only.

Back then, I wouldn't let anyone see any of my work. I was afraid someone might  criticize it and I was not ready for that.  I quit drawing in 1964, when I joined the Navy. Oh, I doodled occasionally through the years but nothing serious. I started drawing again in December of 2016. I had doctors orders to find myself a hobby that I can keep myself involved with.  Drawing seemed to be a logical choice.

The work I do now is not bad for an old blind man. I have travelled through time and it has taken its toll. I am afflicted with Age Related Macular Degeneration and I will gradually lose my eyesight over time. As of now, I see fairly good up close - out to maybe 30 feet. I have to move my eyes around a lot to see around the blind spots but I can still see well enough to draw. I chuckle about it because I am classified as blind by the DMV. I cannot get a driver's license in Indiana - which is understandable. My new Indiana State ID card even reads that I am blind.

Oh well - I will keep drawing my pictures as long as I can see to do it and have the strength to pick up a pencil. Drawing is relaxing for me and it keeps me out of the wife's way.

Now I try to show my work off every chance I get. Your comments - even criticism - are welcomed.

I draw about many subjects. I  try to draw the things that interest me. I try to draw more than just men's heads.

=======================

I was born and raised in Rotan, Fisher County, Texas. It is located on the staked plains of west Texas, between Abilene and Lubbock. It is very remote and isolated. You will not likely pass through Rotan unless it is your destination.  It is now known as "The Big Country" - I sometimes like to call it "the outback of Texas".  In Texas history, it was part of the Comancheria, a vast empire inhabited almost entirely by Comanche Indians until the late 1860's. A few whites passed through there back in the earlier times, including Spanish explorers. The Comanche's were fiercely protective and the whites had no desire to stay there. The first actual  white settlers established several large cattle ranches and everything was centered around them for many years. The railroads started coming through that part of the country in the 1880's and 1890's, and new roads were established as the region became more populated.  Gradually, over time, the big ranches were broken up and opened up for general homesteading and the smaller farms and ranches that we see there today were created, along with many small towns, including Rotan. Some of those towns no longer exist. I can not claim that my ancestors were among those early settlers. As a matter of fact, we ended up there purely by chance. My father was working as a laborer, putting in new highways out there in the late 1930's and early 1940's, as part of President Roosevelt's program to create jobs and keep men working so we could pull out of the Great Depression . Dad made friends with several people in Rotan, liked it and moved his family there around 1944. I was born there in 1946.

I must admit that I couldn't wait to get away from there when I was a boy. When I turned 18 in 1964, I joined the U.S. Navy. I now have fond memories about growing up there.

I am now an old man. I live in New Haven, Indiana with my wife, Linda.
