George Danner

(1752 - 1844)

George is first mentioned in the Records of the Moravians in North Carolina on 27 February 1781 when "This morning we heard that the men who plundered in Friedland yesterday were caught last night and were under guard at George Tanner's." His name also occurs in the North Carolina Revolutionary Pay Vouchers, Vol. XII:

State of North Carolina, S37------------N=559

This is to certify that George Danner was allowed thirty seven pounds specie for public claim by the Upper Board of Auditors 1[?] day of June 1782. Traugott Bagge & Charles Bruce, Aud. [an additional voucher was located for John Danner for five pounds twelve shillings]

On the 29th of September, 1786 a Deed was drawn between Frederick Wm Marshall to George Tanner for 189 3/4 acres. Marshall is "of Salem in Wachovia in Surry county ...Esquire of the first part and George Tanner of Rowan County of the aforesaid state the other part, planter." The indenture was for the sum of sixty pounds and sixteen shillings. The land was on side of the South Fork of Muddy Creek, plat 109 adjoining property of John Jacob Schott and Adam Fischel. This fact is also noted in the Records of the Moravians in North Carolina a LIST OF FARM OWNERS IN WACHOVIA page 1343.

Correspondence with Gerald K. Danner of California provides the following:

"The date and place of George Donner the elder's marriage is unknown. His first known child was born in 1783 near Salem. George Donner's identified children were

George apparently moves from North Carolina before 1800 and is enumerated in Kentucky in the early 1800's. By 1820 he has moved to Illinois where he purchases 8000 acres on 23 February 1835 according to Illinois Public Land Purchase Records. George dies on 27 June 1844 according to an obituary in the Sangamon Journal.
