Danner, Peter 1783-1880

Peter Danner

(1783 - before 1880)

On the 10th of February 1784, a Moravian diarist, Rev. Lorenzo Bagge, writes that

"Soon thereafter two fathers from a German neighborhood about seven miles away said that they would like to have their children baptized also, and I could not refuse, so in a brief service, and with the usual liturgy, the two were baptized Christian Bro and Peter Danner."

In the 1800 Census for Surry County, Frederick Danner is listed with four sons between 10 and 16.Frederick, Peter, Samuel, and John. Two sons under 10, Adam and Jacob and three daughters less than 16, Christeany, Catherine and Sarah. In 1810 a Peter is listed in Surry county with a wife between 16 and 26 and two female children under 10. The 1812 Tax List for Surry again lists Peter as a voter. In 1820 Frederick Sr. and Jr. along with Adam and John remain in Surry County but Peter is no longer listed.

Peter has yet to be found in an 1820 census but does appear in the ASHE CO., NC LAND ENTRIES Jan 1809 – Sept 1823 with the following land entries:

Page 125; #3928 Feb 1823, Peter Tanner enters 50 ac in Ashe Co on water of New R; borders: begin near W corner of Jacob Ferguson's land now owned by Jonathan "Willson", run E with said line. & "various courses", includes the vacant land between Ferguson's tract and land where Wilson lives.

DeLyle "Bud" Danner believes the William Danner of Overton Co., TN [1850 census] is also a son of Peter Danner and his first wife named Catherine. Bud provides the following:

"In the 1830 census of Ashe County, NC, [page 021] shows a Peter Danner with the following:

On August 24, 1835 50 acres of land in Ashe County is surveyed for Peter Danner.

"I have this day surveyed for Peter Danner fifty acres of land on a branch of Watauga River beginning on a white oak and runs north thirty six poles to a white oak and back then east sixty poles to a red oak then south forty poles to a white oak, then east sixty six poles to a stake then south forty five poles to a stake then west one hundred and twenty six poles to a stake the north forty nine poles crossing said branch to the beginning. Surveyed Apr 16th 1836.

On page 11 of the 1840 census for Ashe County, NC Peter is listed with a son between 5 and 10 [ another William], a son between 10 and 15 [John] and himself between 50 and 60. His wife is between 40 and 50 and a new daughter under 5 [Jane] and one from 15 to 20 [Mary].

Several pages (#35) and families away we have the first listing for Frederick Danner, son of Peter.

Peter and Susannah's other children are David (1836 [but not in 1840 census?]), Adaline "Becky" (1843) and Peter Jr. (1845).

Peter and Susannah are listed together in the 1850 Census for Watauga Co., NC. He is 62 and Susannah is 61. By 1860, Peter is listed alone, still in Watauga County. In 1870 he is still in Watauga county, at age 69[?] and as a Blacksmith, but is now listed with a 39 year old lady named Huldy, and 14 year old Tilda Landen with 9 year old Alexander.

I assume Peter dies between 1870 and 1880 since he is not to be found in the 1880 census.
