(The information in this sketch is based on material in the Biographical Record of Bureau, Marshall and Putnam Counties, Illinois.

“Samuel Dalzell and family came to the United States in 1827 and settled in Lawrence County, PA, where he spent the rest of his life and died in 1848. He was born in Dromore, County Down, N. Ireland, the son of William Dalzell. His wife, Mary Chambers was a daughter of Robert Chambers, whose brothers, Benjamin and James foundedChambersburg, PA. While the Biographical Record doe not iindicate which of the children were born in Ireland, we believe, based on the Censuses, that at least one, Isabella, was born after the family came to this country. Mary survived Samuel and is shown in the 1850 Census of North Beaver Twp., Lawrence County, PA as:

We have identified one of the sons of Samuel and Mary in the 1850 Census of West Fallowfield Twp. Crawford Co. PA in the home of his wife’s parents:

William Dalzell 23 m Clergyman IreThis William Dalzell moved with his family to Iowa in 1851 where he travelled over the state as a home missionary. Later he returned east in Ohio and Pennsylvania before he moved to Illinois, where in 1889 he became manager of the Spring Valley Coal Co.

Although we doubt that it was intended to give the order of birth of the children, we have listed them in the order given in the above mentioned Biographical Record. The children of this family are: John, Robert, Elizabeth m. William Yoder, Sarah m. Cowden Taylor, James, Isabella m. William Welker, Nancy d. unmarried, Martha m. James Gill, Margaret m. William Hill, William m. Elizabeth C. Martzell, Mary Jane m. Robert Hill.
