Early American Dalzells and Delzells

Researchers

         I have received many letters, Emails and family histories which have been very helpful.  Of these there are too many to mention individually.

There are a number of f amily historians and genealogists, however, who have contributed major manuscripts and books. These are listed below.

        Much of the information listed below is not available except through individual family members, or possibly in local libraries, however, I would be pleased to provide additional information about the items.

        I have included my reference “MyRef” numbers so I can located the reference if necessary. I would be very pleased to add contributors.

  

Baird, Mrs. Norman. Robert Delzell Family 125 Years Since Settling in Louisa Co.,Iowa, 1848 - 1973.(MyRef 325). This is an outstanding Family history and genealogy with over 80 pages of stories and genealogy.  It is fully indexed and refers to the DELZELLS of Louisa Co., IA.

There may be copies in Iowa libraries. It deals with one of the few families that spell their name DELZELL, which makes me think they are closely related to the Blount Co. Delzells.

Chapman, Mary Lou. Descendants of Thomas Dalzell (1750-1832) (MyRef 602). This a complete genealogy of the Kentucky  descendants of Thomas Dalzell (1750-1832) who was born in Ballymoney, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.This family is included in this website under the heading "Thomas Dalzell(1750-1831) ,Lawrence Co., PA " in the list on the left side of this page.

Delzell, Hugh Wayland. Delzell Ties, A History of the Family of John Dalzell of Blount County, Tennessee. Library of Congres Catalog Card No.; 77-89856.  I can't add praise enough for the great work done by Hugh Wayland Delzell. He worked with an old fashioned ditto machine and without a data base. Delzell Ties is in my view the definitive work in this field. Regretably, it is out of print, although there may be copies in scattered libraries, escpecially in Blount and

Garner, Bert. Many letters with fascinating details of his own adventures in the Smoky Mountains. Bert's main contribution to our story, however, was his great help in discovering John Delzell's gravestone, keeping it safe near his cabin in Maryville, TN, and finally shipping the stone to Robert O. Delzell in Wisconsin. Click on "Gravestone" at the top of this page for more details.

Mize, Max and Jimmie. For their help and hospitality in securing John Delzell’s gravestone and protecting the Hamil cemetery which is on their property. Since John Delzell who is one of the earliest burials in this cemetery, it seems possible that it is on the original land grant.

Rogers, Mary Gale. Scroggs and Delzell Families. (MyRef 620). Genealogies of SCROGGS, DUNCAN, MCCLURE, families of Indiana.

Swift, Barbara. The Giffin and Delzell Families. (MyRef 650). Barbara has preserved over 100 pages of the closely related GIFFIN, CARSON, WILSON, CURRAN, GLASS. and related familiy genealogy and family history, first assembled by Jean Ann Glass.

Templeton, Dorothy. A wondeful compilation of family history with many photos mostly related to the Indiana Delzells and their descendants through Solomon and William Newton Delzell.( MyRef. 1104.)
