Charles Emanuel Sholder1,2

     Charles Emanuel Sholder was born on 26 June 1839 at farm of Christian (Scholderer) Sholder, Lycoming Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.3,2 He was the son of Christian August Scholderer and Anna Margareta Lutscher.2 Charles Emanuel Sholder married, at age 24, Mary Anna Kinley, age 20, daughter of John Kinley and Rosanna Berry, on Tuesday, 8 September 1863 at Old Lycoming Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.2 Charles Emanuel Sholder died on 5 April 1919 at age 79 years, 9 months and 10 days.4 He was buried in the Wildwood Cemetery, located in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.
     Charles Emanuel Sholder was probably included as a free white male, between the age of newborn and under 5 years, in Christian August Scholderer's household, enumerated 1 June 1840 in the Sixth Census for the United States of America, Lycoming Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.5

Charles Emanuel Sholder was listed as living in the household of Christian August Scholderer in the Seventh Census for the United States of America, enumerated on 19 September 1850 Lycoming Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, as "Emanuel" age 11 born in Pennsylvania.6 Charles Emanuel Sholder was a saddler, one who makes, repairs or sells saddles or other furnishings for horses circa 1860 at Williamsport, East Ward, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.7

Charles Emanuel Sholder was enumerated on 25 July 1860 as a resident in the household of George Rothrock in the Eighth Census for the United States of America, in the State of Pennsylvania, Lycoming County, Williamsport, East Ward as "Charles Shuler" age 20 born in Pennsylvania with his occupation being listed as a sadler. There was no direct entry stating the name Charles Sholder, the entry for Charles Shuler was used due to the similarity of name, age and place of birth.8

A brief account for Charles has been found in the "History of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania." Originally published in 1892, John F. Meginness editor helped to ensured that this bit of history would be saved for his descendants. The following account was found on page 1135:

     Charles was born and raised on the homestead farm in Old Lycoming Township, Lycoming County on 26 June 1839. Then in 1867 he purchased his present [1892] farm and has since been engaged in the cultivation of fruit and produce. Politically he is a Democrat, and is connected with the Presbyterian Church at Bottle Run in Old Lycoming Twp. He is also a member of the Farmer's Alliance of Lycoming County.2 He and Mary Anna Kinley appeared on the census of 7 June 1900 at Old Lycoming Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. He became a widower at the age of 71 with the death of Mary on 16 May 1911.4 Charles Emanuel Sholder appears in family photograph on 24 August 1912 Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. This was taken as a part of a family reunion in which this photograph appeared in the Sunday Grit on 1 September 1912.
