    9. BACKGROUND INFORMATION - Operation Shenandoah II, a multi-brigade operation utilitzing the headquarters of the 1st and 3rd Brigades as control elements, was initiated 290600 September 1967. The 2-28 Infantry had been under the OPCON of the 3rd Brigade and since 4 October had been in base camp at Lai Khe as the Division Rapid Reaction Force (RRF). On 5 October Company C, 2-28 Infantry moved to secure Fire Support Patrol Base (FSPB) CAISSON V (XT736540) where Battery B, 2-33 Artillery (105T) and Battery A, 1-5 Artillery (105T) were positioned. On 8 October, 2-28 Infantry (-) conducted an air assault, under the OPCON of the 1st Brigade, into a Landing Zone (LZ) in the vicinity of XT659557 and established a Night Defensive Position (NDP) at XT660555. Also working with the 2-28 Infantry were 9 members of an ARVN Provincial Recon unit and their US Advisor, a captain. The battalion was initiated into its new area of operation as one of the lift aircraft received a short burst of automatic weapons fire. The following day, 9 October, Comany D was on a search and destroy (S & D) mission when it located and destroyed 35 incomplete bunkers (XT663562).
