Nimrod "Rhoddy" Anthony

NIMROD "RHODDY" ANTHONY was born in 1805 near Alamance, North Carolina. He is the son of NICHOLAS and SARA NICHOLSON ANTHONY.    His grandfather, JACOB ANTHONY, immigrated to the United States from Germany.   Jacob was married to Magdalena Shoffner. They are listed in the 1790 North Carolina Census as a family of three males over sixteen and four females.
Rhoddy moved from North Carolina to Tennessee. There he married Synthia Brown. A Character Certificate from the General Land Office of Texas, dated August 20, 1835 states as follows: "Rhoddy Anthony, a native of Tennessee, is a man of family consisting of eight persons, emigrated to San Augustine, Texas in 1831." Signed Sam Thompson, Alcd.
Rhoddy is listed in the List of Texas Volunteers in 1836 as a private in Thomas S. McFarland's Company in the Texas Revolution.
The Church of Christ at Antioch, in San Augustine Co., was organized in 1836 in the home of Rhoddy and Synthia, about four miles north of San Augustine.  Rhoddy was selected as an elder and served in this capacity about fifty years.  The church met in the Anthony home from organization until about 1870 when a new structure was erected.
Synthia died in 1879 and was buried in the "Anthony Cemetery" on their property in San Augustine County.  Over the years the cemetery has been lost. Their grandchildren have honored them by placing a memorial marker in the Antioch Church Cemetery.
After Synthia's death, Rhoddy remarried to LUCY ANN FOOTE BRIDGES.  Upon Rhoddy's death in 1890, Lucy Ann deeded his property to his surviving children in a deed dated November 19, 1890. Lucy Ann was also buried in the Anthony Cemetery. Her death date is unknown.
