James Carstarphen's Will
|
| In the
name of God amen, I James Carstarphen of the county of Halifax and
the state of North Carolina being of sound mind & perfect memory
do make this my last will & testament. First I give (illegible)
unto my beloved wife Mary Carstarphen all the property that came by
her, also one riding chair, one horse called filey, one mare monkey,
two cows & calves, two sows of pigs. I also lend my beloved wife
the house wherein I now live together with three hundred acres of
land more or less the same being purchased of Ben Cheatham estate
during her life or widowhood after which I give the same to my daughter
Sarah Rebecca. I also lend my wife during her life or widowhood our
negroes named Jim Hail, one other named Phillis with his children
Will and Eliza together with his further increase together with Rachael
Maria & Abram after his death to be equally divided between her
children Sarah Rebecca and William Daniel also two beds of furniture,
two negroes (illegible) and Yellow Jim, half dozen chairs, one table,
ten silver table spoons after her death or widowhood except Yellow
Jim to be equally divided between her children. Secondly I give and
bequeath unto my Chapile Carstarphin the land & plantation where
in he now lives lying on the west side of Beaverdam Swamp containing
two hundred sixty acres more or less also three negroes Will, Joseph
& Rachael together with all the stock & furniture he has now
in possession to him and his heirs forever. Thirdly, I give and bequeath
unto my son Oran D Carstarphen all the negroes which he has in possession
to him and his heirs forever. Fourthly, I give and bequeath unto my
daughter Fanny Read the negroes which she has in possession namely
Dick, Chartats & Stephen with all other property here fore given
to her and her heirs forever. I also give unto my said daughter Nancy
one negro called black Ben to her and her heirs forever, Fifthly,
I lend unto to my daughter Elizabeth Horn during her life a tract
of land which I purchased of William Amis boundary by Tomkins Spring
Branch down the branch to Beaverdam Swamp which swamp is to be the
dividing line between Chapele & Elisabeth also five negroes Joan,
Cree, Moris, Ester & Andrew also one sorrel mare, two bay horses,
eleven head of cattle, five beds of furniture, one (illegible) and
(illegible) together with all her household & Kitchen furniture
now in possession of Henry HORN also one negro named (illegible) the
said property until the death of said Elisabeth to be under the direction
of Rhesa Read and after her death to be equally divided between said
Elizabeth's children. Sixthly, I give unto my said son James H. Carstarphen
the lands bought of James & William Winters estate containing
three hundred acres more or less also five ewes of lambs, two cows
& calves, two sows of pigs one table. Seventhly, I give unto My
son Joseph J. Carstarphen the land I bought of Benjamin McCullock
also the druid mare, two cows & calves, two sows of pigs, five
ewes of lambs, half dozen teaspoons and one bed of furniture, one
desk. I also give unto my two sons Jo. & James Jointly one and
the mete and the following negroes (illegible), Harry, Jacob, Eli,
Maggy, Lucy, Lydia, Peggy, Dorcas, and Aaron to them and their heirs
forever. I also give unto my son James mare called (illegible). Eighthly,
I give unto my daughter Martha Carstarphen one track of land lying
on Rocky Swamp which I purchased of Jefre Davidson also four negroes
Patia, Kinchin, Jim Green & Lucy, one bed of furniture, one chest
of drawers, one mare called mouse, one sorrel filly, two cows &
calves, two sows of pigs, one pair of cartwheels together with the
tools belonging to the aforesaid plantation, also one saddle &
bridle to her and her heirs forever, — 8 July 1815 after the
death of my wife or widowhood I give Yellow Jim to Chapel Carstarphen
children. |
