Lucy Elizabeth Lester

     Lucy Lester was born April 16, 1882 in the family home at 37 Barrow St. St Helens, Lancashire, England to Henry and Mary (Watkin) Lester. After the death of her mother Mary in 1886 Lucy was adopted by Thomas and Maria Brooks however Lucy maintained the Lester surname. The rest of her family immigrated to the United States in 1887 while Lucy stayed in England with the Brooks family. Lucy's stepmother Mary Ellen returned to England in 1900 to bring Lucy and her stepbrother Auther Morley to the United States. They left from the port of Liverpool on July 11, 1900 on the steamship Rhynland of the Red Star Shipping Line with a top speed of 12.5 knots. They arrived in the port of Philadelphia on July 23, 1900 . Lucy settled with her father and brothers in Barnesboro, Cambria county Pennsylvania. In 1902 Lucy married John Welsh and they had two children Leo and Irene both children died very young, one at 5 months, and the other at 2 years old. John Welsh was a lineman and was killed on the job. She then married John William Carr who was a artist and photographer and they had three children, John born 1906, Robert born 1908, and Rosemarie born 1910. John Carr died around 1914 at which time John and Lucy's sons had to be sent to a boy's home. Lucy's brother Joe Lester and his wife Daisey took in Rosemarie. By 1920 Lucy was a widow working as a helper to a family in Harrisburg, PA she was 37 years old. Lucy then moved to Hershey Pennsylvania and got work at the Hershey's chocolate factory. By 1930 Lucy and her sons where once again living together she was at this time working as a laborer in the cholocate factory. Lucy lived to be 81 years old she died July 1, 1963. She was intered in Hershey Cemetery beside her son John who proceded her in death, He passed away Mar 26 1951. Robert Carr 5/24/08 - 12/22/82 is buried in the national cemetery at Fort Indiantown gap. He was one of the 1st buried there - 12th or 13th. Robert married Violet Saufley (7/3/1908 - 7/21/1996), and they had 2 kids, Irene M. Carr 9/6/1932 and James R. Carr 11/4/1940
