SIXTH GENERATION
137. Hezakiah RENEAU
(1)(2)
was born in 1782 in Bowers Hill, Peters Twp, Washington, PA. He died on 19 Apr 1850 in Harrison,
Hamilton, TN. He was married to Ruth BRIMER (daughter of Jesse BRIMER
and Eleanor BRIMER) on 20 Mar 1813 in Dandridge, , TN.
Ruth BRIMER(1)
(2) was born in 1793 in North Carolina. She died after 1873 in Jefferson
Co., Tennessee. In the index to the
Jefferson County, Tenn. marriage book, you can find the following: #1067 March
20, 1813 Hezekiah Reneau to Tutha Brimer.
Hezekiah Reneau was drafted
into the War of 1812 at Muddy Creek Muster Ground in Jefferson County, TN, on
January 10, 1814, along with Jessie Brimer, Fleming Renoe and Thomas Renoe and
served as a Pvt in Capt. George Gregory's Tennessee Militia until after the battle
at Horse Shoe.
He and his wife Ruthy Brimer lived near Muddy Creek in Jefferson County, TN.
The Muddy Creek section is now under water from Douglas Lake. They must have
gone to Alabama and returned because son Thomas said he was born in Alabama in
1825.
The 1822 Jefferson County, Tennessee, Tax lists shows Hezekiah Reneau in Capt.
Craig's Company.
The 1830 Jefferson County, Tennessee, lists Hezekiah Renneau with 2 males under
5, 1 male 5 to 10, 1 male 15 to 20, 1 male 40 to 50, 3 females 10 to 15, and
1 female 30 to 40.
The 1840 Jefferson County, Tennessee, lists Hezekiah Reneau with 2 males 15 to
20, 1 male 20 to 30, 1 male 50 to 60, 1 female 5 to 10, 1 female 21 to 30, and
1 female 40 to 50.
Hezekiah died of typhoid fever. When Ruth filed a Widow's Declaration for Pension
in Jefferson County, TN she said Hezekiah died "at his
own residence in said county" on April 19, 1851, but papers filed in Hamilton
County says he died at Harrison on April 19, 1850. The 1850 census for Hamilton County (p.456/800) has Ruth Rennoe 47, Sarah 22,
Martha 16, with parents both born in North Carolina. It is assumed that this
listing is for her.
The 1860 Jefferson County, Tennessee, census (JE82-369) shows R. Reneau, age
68, Jane age 27, and S. (male), age 7. It is unknown who this child was. He may
have been Jane's.
The 1870 Jefferson County, Tennessee, census shows Ruth Reneu, 77 b. NC, and
Sarah M., 39 b. TN.
On March 11, 1851, in Hamilton
County, Ruth applied for the bounty land (80 acres) "to which she may be
entitled" under the Act of the State Congress on March 3, 1855. On April 1, 1871, in Jefferson County, Ruth applied for her widow's Declaration
for Pension. In this application she said she was 79 years old. She purchased
property in Jefferson County on June 11, 1872. Also mentioned in this transaction
was her daughter, Martha J. Cooper. This property was sold on January 23, 1883,
by the estate of Ruth Reneau and by Sarah Reneau.
It is not known exactly where Hezekiah and Ruth are buried. It is assumed that
since Hezekiah died in Hamilton County he is buried there, and Ruth is probably
buried in Jefferson County since her will was probated there. Ruth's will in
1873 showed 4 boys and 4 girls. Her will is dated May 3, 1872 (Will Book 6, p.491). In her will, Ruth gives all
control to her daughters Sarah Reneau and Martha Jane Cooper. She mentions but
does not leave anything to her other children William, Thomas, James, Preston,
Elizabeth McCarter Reneau, and Margaret Edmonds.
