58. Benjamin RENEAU
(5)(1)
(2) was born on 3 Feb 1740 in Allegheny,
PA. He was born on 3 Feb 1740 in Allegheny, PA. He died in 1803 in Allegheny,
PA. He died in 1803 in Allegheny, PA. He has Ancestral File number 56CP-W8.
Benjamin Reno was a private in the Pennsylvania regiment in the Revolutionary
War. His will of July 9, 1793 was proven and on file in the court house in Washington
Co., PA. "History of Alleghany County" p. 397 says Benjamin came to
county about 1765 and settled on Chartier's Creek opposite what is now called
Bower's Hill. (Guy Reno ms. p. 37). According to a book "Hudiburgh Family
1650-1972" cited by Nichole Edmisten, Benjamin Reno bought 400 acres on
the right bank of Charter's Creek in Washington County on a Viginia certificate
in 1769. Shortly thereafter, John Reno and Lewis Reno acquired adjoining acreage
on Charter's Creek by the same means. And in 1773, Lewis Clock and his wife Dolly,
who was a Reno also, took up 400 acres nearby, on both sides of Robinson's Run.
Thomas Hudiburgh, also of Hugeonot ancestry, married Dorothy Reno and settled
here also. The families apparently joined the Peter's Creek Baptist Church which
was established in 1773. His wife Jane (some records say Jean) was twice widowed;
she was on an 1784 tax list for Washington Co., PA, which is now part of Allegheny
Co. Benjamin's name appears in records of Yahogonia Co., PA in 1767 and 1777.
His will written in his own writing and filed in Washington Co. reads as
follows: "In the name of God Amen, I Benjamin Reno being weak in body but
in perfect mind and memory and in my proper senses, therefore calling to mind
the immortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men one to
die do make and ordain this my last will and testament. And first I recommend
my spirit to God and give it and my body to the earth to be buried in a Christian
like manner at the ? of my executors not doubting but at the resurrection I shall
receive the same again by the Almighty power of God, and as touching such worthy
estate as it hath pleased God to bless on me in this life I give demise and dispose
of in the following like manner; and first, I do appoint and ordain my wife and
my son William executors of this my last will and testabment, and I do also appoint
William Bell my wife's brother as Guardian Executor over my son William till
he comes of age. I leave and bequeath my whoe estate both real and personal in
the hands of my beloved wife Jean Reno for the use of maintaining and raising
my children and giving them regular education; this whole power invested in her
during her widowhood investing and defending in my two step children John Savers
and Liddie Savers their is a certain estate from their father many hands coming
which I leave to their choice when they come to lawful age to have that and no
more; or other ways to have an equal part of my whole estate both real and personal
with the rest of my children if they shall make choice to have an equal part
with the rest of my children when they come to lawful age then they shall give
good and lawful recipts for their whole estates which is my hands coming to them
from their father and when my children shall be grown up inclining to take their
estate in their own hand to be their part to be appraised to them as she shall
give it to them and at my wifes marriage or decease then my children is to have
my whole estate equally divided among them allowing such just accounts and due
credits being given by the Executor so that one shall not receive one penny more
than another, to them their heirs and assigns forever. And I do hereby evoke
disallow and disannul all other former wills legacies or bequeaths ratifying
and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament in witness
whereof I have hereunder set my hand and affixed my seal this twenty fifth day
of September in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty two.
Benjamin Reno."
