The nationality of Jean Michael Bihl was French. He was a Catholic. He spoke Alsatian. His common name was Michael. Jean was born at Hirtzfelden, Ensisheim, Haut-Rhin, France, on 16 June 1796.1 He was the son of Francois Joseph Bihl and Marie Anne Strebel. He was tailleur (stone cutter) on 11 March 1818 at Hirtzfelden, Ensisheim, Haut-Rhin, France. The meaning of tailleur is somewhat questionable as it means tailor literally. Since he was a day laborer for most of his life, it raises doubts that he was a tailor of clothes or apprentice tailor in his early life.2 He married Therese Strosser on 11 March 1818 at Hirtzfelden, Ensisheim, Haut-Rhin, France, at age 21 and she 19.2 Jean obtained a passport to travel from Hirtzfelden, Haut-Rhin, France to Texas at Colmar, Haut-Rhin, France, on 21 September 1846. Michael and his oldest daughter, Marie Anne, obtained a passport to emmigrate to Texas. His occupation was listed as Journalier (day laborer), from Hirtzfelden going to Texas in America. Others from Hirtzfelden obtaining passports to the same destination the same day were: Michel Nagelin, 37 year old Cultivator (farmer) and wife; Paul Stroser,33 year old Cultivator (farmer), wife and daughter; Antoine Strosser, 20 year old Domestique (servant); and Simon Fest, 19 year old Domestique (servant)..3 He emigrated, on 15 November 1846. Point of origin: Antwerp, Belgium, on ship "Schanunga". Michael Bihl, 50 year old day laborer, is listed with Marie, age 20. Their listed place of birth or residence was Hirtzfelden. The ship's arrival date is not listed but was probably around 25 December 1846. Other passengers from Hirtzfelden on the same ship were Joseph Bihl, 31 year old carpenter, Catherine, age 28, and Rosa, age 10 months; Simon Fest, 20 year old day laborer; Antoine Strosser, 20 year old farmer; and Paul Strosser, 32 year old mason, Catherine age 30 and Catherine age 3/4..4 He was a Laborer on 1 October 1850 at San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas.5 Jean was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census at San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. Michael and his family including his new son-in-law, Christian Eichmann, are enumerated next door to George Studer and his family, who traveled with them from Haut-Rhin on the ship "Schanunga.".6 He sold Sale of land to Christian Eichmann at quarter part of Acequia lot, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, on 21 May 1851. Michael sold the rear half of his half of the lot thereby being a quarter part of the whole original surveyed lot to his son-in-law, Christian Eichmann, for $24. Since the two deeds, Fest to Bihl and Bihl to Eichmann, were executed the same day, it would appear that Michael got his quarter of the original lot and half of the house for a net of $4. There was a deed restriction that Christian was to provide a 3 foot wide path for access to the ditch at the rear..7 He bought one half of the lot on Acequia Street and the house from Simon Fest Sr. at San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, on 21 May 1851. Simon sold one half of the original lot on Acequia Street and one half of the house he had constructed to his father-in-law, Michael Bihl for $28. The lot and the house fronted on Acequia and ran to the San Pedro ditch behind..8 Jean died circa 1853 at Galveston, Galveston County, Texas. Michael probably died in Galveston in the yellow fever epidemic. According to an archivist for the Catholic Church for that area, people died so fast and in such numbers that records were not kept and they were buried in mass graves. Not a pretty picture but probably accurate for many areas in that time.9 His body was interred at Galveston, Galveston County, Texas. |

The land certificate for 640 acres to the heirs of Michael Biehl, in this case Therese Strosser, his wife. It was issued two years after his death by Charles N. Riotte, Land Commissioner. It was Survey No. 1503 in Section No. 6 situated in the County of Atascosa on the head waters of the Atascosa River about 34 miles S20W from San Antonio.6 Therese died on 16 November 1873 at San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, at age 75.7 Her body was interred on 16 November 1878 at San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, at St. Joseph's Cemetery.7 |
