This remarkable postcard, probably dating from about 1910, shows what is very likely a view from the canal of "Indian Rock" described by Rebecca. The view is looking south, before the river bends sharply to the west. Here, the canal is situated some twenty feet above the river (below to the left), along a bluff. This portion of the bluff appeared to have been removed to accomodate the canal, leaving Indian Rock on the left overlooking the river. Later, Rebecca goes on to say that in times of heavy boat traffic, the water often spilled over the canal, cascading in sheets down to the river.

 

Here is the identical scene, as of January 2002. The canal bed is still quite well evident between Indian Rock and the cliffs to the right, known as 'the Narrows'. Cross Keys Road, at the site of the former canal bridge, is in the far distance in this view, about a five minute walk ahead (south). The Schuylkill River is about 20 feet below and to the left (east) of Indian Rock, as can be seen in the picture below.
