Maurer House

This house was owned by George Maurer. In the 1880s the house was rented by Silas Rickenbach, who worked the farm as a tenant farmer. In the 1890s, Curtin Rickenbach and his new wife Lizzie Noecker moved there. Their two daughters Minnie and May were probably born here.

The canal passes immediately to the right (northeast) of the house. Today the canal bed at that point is part of the front lawn, partially (but not totally) filled in. The view below is of the house, from in the canal bed. There is an inscription on the side of the house near the chimney that says "G.M. 1820" (George Maurer, built in 1820).
