"Way's Steam Towboat Directory" Compiled by Frederick Way, Jr. with Joseph W. Rutter

T2501  V. F. Wilson

Stw tb wh 1860 - 1873. b. McKeesport, PA, 285.71 tons. Engines 17's-6 ft. stroke. Three boilers. Owned by V. F. Wilson with Capt. Daniel Pollard, master. Messrs. Pollard, Dunshee and Hammitt operated her towing coal along with the IKE HAMMITT. Taken over by the USQMD for Civil War service, she was General Grant's dispatch boat at Vicksburg and was sent north with the news of the fall of that city. Continued towing coal after the war and was lost on February 17, 1873 during high water at Pittsburgh. While moored in the Monongahela River below the Smithfield Street bridge, a free-astray loaded coal barge struck and sank her. The OIL VALLEY NO. 2 also was struck and sunk but was later recovered. In the account of this accident in the Pittsburgh "Commercial" February 18, 1873 it is stated that she was named for Victor F. Wilson, whose identity I know not.

1859 McKeesport Directory.

Daniel Pollard, pilot, house Fifth between Water and Market.

The 9th Street Cemetery listing for Daniel says he was a Native of Ohio . I have been unable to find a record of his birth there and indeed it was Nancy's family that seems to have a link to Ohio , Brown Co. . There is also a listing in Passengers and Immigrations list for New York City that says he came on the ship Cambria , from Liverpool in 1831 though this listing reports his age 2 years older then we have calculated it .

More About DANIEL POLLARD:

Burial: First at 9th St. , then , McKeesport Versailles Cemetery

Census: 1850, McKeesport, PA

Occupation: 1850, Pilot

Notes for NANCY PANGBURN:

According to the McKeesport Versailles Cemetery listings of Pollard's and the dates they died, there were three Pollard's that died on the same day.

Nancy Pollard  Feb. 01,1858  age: 28 "I am sure these dated are incorrect "

Sarah Pollard   Feb. 01,1858  age: 27 ( Identity  unknown )

William Pollard Feb.01,1858  age: 05 ( Perhaps the son of Norval Pollard Gen. 2)

I was unable to find a newspaper article of this or an obituary on any of the above. could have been  an accident of some sort.

Also there are no headstones for any of the above three Pollard's and no headstone for Harry Pollard who is also buried in the McKeesport Versailles Cemetery.

These dates come from the 9th street Cemetery burial list and are not accepted as accurate . It is more likely that Nancy Died in 1849-1850 or sooner as she does not show up in the 1850 census for this household in McKeesport . If like the DAR papers say she was born in 1822 then 1850 just before the census is the best guess for her death as the burial listing gives her age at death as 28 added to 1822 this gives us 1850 . We still do not know for sure who the William Pollard and the Sarah Pollard were . Also checking into a Elizabeth Taylor died 1860 at 75 years old , the listing says she was a native of London Co. VA. but I assume this to be a spelling error that was meant to be Loudoun Co. VA. There are both Pollard's , Harrison's and Taylor's in this County in this time frame !

                                                         OBITUARY

                                   OLD-TIME RESIDENT IS CALLED BEYOND

Norval Pollard, age 77 years, one of this city's widely known residents, died last evening at 5 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H.C. Cornell, of 3417 Auburn street. Death was due to ailments incidental to old age, and followed a stroke about three years ago. He was born in McKeesport, the son of the late Captain Daniel and Nancy Pangburn-Pollard, and had resided here all his life. In his younger days, he was a steamboat captain on local rivers and later followed paper hanging and decorating as a vocation. In 1907 he began work in the shipping department of the tube works, but was compelled to retire about three years ago when he suffered a stroke. He is survived by the following children: Ben, Norval M., and Harry Pollard, and Mrs Cornell, of this city and Herbert S. Pollard, of Pittsburgh, and a sister, Mrs. Mollie O'Neill, of Bellevue. The funeral services will be held at the Cornell residence, Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock in charge of the Rev. George J. Rowe, of Mt. Pleasant, former pastor of the Christy Park, M.E. church. Interment will take place Monday morning in Versailles cemetery.

i.  WILLIAM D.3 POLLARD, b. Bet. 1871 - 1872, McKeesport , PA.; d. August 14, 1872, McKeesport , PA..

Notes for WILLIAM D. POLLARD:

We are not sure if this is a child of Norval & Anna's , Should this turn out to be the child listed in the McKeesport Versailles Cemetery as being 5 years old

it is then possible he was the child of Daniel and Kate's ,  Daniel being dead for 3 years at the date of William's death ,  it is likely he would have ben mentioned in his will and he was not . So for now the assumption is that Anna DeWalt & Norval were the parents of this child . This being the case Anna was either pregnant at the time of her wedding or miscarried in the last part of her pregnancy .

The Listing for the Burial Date comes from the list of burials at the 9th St. Cemetery of McKeesport . Daniel and Several other members of the family were originally buried there but were moved to the McKeesport & Versailles cemetery some time after 1875 .

Norval M. (Dick) Pollard of 1819 Converse St. died suddenly today at 7 a.m. at the age of 81.

Friends are to be received at the Finney Funeral Home after 7 p.m. today and services will be conducted there Thursday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Dr. Joseph D. Piper. Interment will follow in McKeesport and Versailles Cemetery.

A retired salesman for the Watson-Standard Paint Co., Mr. Pollard was affiliated with the First Methodist Church, serving on the official board. He was a member of Titus Lodge, Knights of Phthias, and the Optimists Club. He was employed as a youth at the W. DeWees Wood Works and, for a time, with the city water department.

As a young man, Mr. Pollard was active as a baseball player, with his brothers. He was a bowler and amateur boxer as well. As an adult, he was interested in sports and particularly in work with boys. He helped to promote boys work through the Optimists Club and Boy Scout programs.

Mr. Pollard was born Jan. 25, 1875, in McKeesport, son of the late Norval and Anna DeWalt Pollard. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Julia Starr Pollard, and a brother, Harry Pollard of McKeesport.

Norval is buried with his first wife Susannah, a double headstone. There is a marker on the ground next to this headstone that I assume is Julia Starr Pollard as the Cemetery Records say she is buried next to Norval.

        Notes for NANCY PANGBURN:

According to the McKeesport Versailles Cemetery listings of Pollard's and the dates they died, there were three Pollard's that died on the same day.

Sarah Pollard Feb. 01,1858 age: 27

        William Pollard Feb.01,1858 age: 05

I was unable to find a newspaper article of this or an obituary on any of the above. Obviously an accident of some sort.

Also there are no headstones for any of the above three Pollard's and no headstone for Harry Pollard who is also buried in the McKeesport Versailles Cemetery.
