Notes for Catherine DEASON
More About Catherine DEASON:
Burial: 1935, Dunolly cemetery, Victoria, Australia. (Source: Aigs Cemetery records.)

Catherine was born in 1870 at Mt Moliagul [Moliagul]. From 1864 to 1869 the Deason family had lived at Bulldog Gully, Moliagul where Catherine’s father prospected for gold and farmed land in partnership with Richard Oates. At some stage, soon after the discovery of the Welcome Stranger nugget in 1869, the family moved to the farm called The Springs, just outside Moliagul.

Catherine probably stayed at The Springs until late 1888 when financial difficulties forced parents, John and Catherine, and the two youngest boys (John & James) to seek work in Melbourne and let out The Springs. There was no mention of daughter Catherine going to Melbourne so it is presumed that she must have stayed behind with relatives or friends – possibly with her brother Henry and his wife in Moliagul.

By about 1890/1891 her parents, John and Catherine, moved back to The Springs.

In 1900, Catherine married Christopher Smith Davies at Maldon.

Christopher’s parents had come to Victoria in the early 1850s. They had 8 children,:
• Frederick Thomas Davies – born 1857, Maldon, died 1862, Maldon, buried Maldon 16 May 1862
• Christopher Smith Davies – born 1861, Maldon, married Catherine Deason (see above)
• Eleanor Ann Davies – born 1862, Maldon, died 1928, married Thomas Titus
• Thomas William Davies – born 1865
• Hugh John Davies – born 1867, Maldon, died 1927, Footscray, Melbourne, married Louisa Haywood
• Joseph Henry Davies – born 1869, Maldon, died 1931, Footscray, Melbourne, married Charlotte Constance Carman
• Thomas Davies – born 1871, married Margaret Jane Martin (or Rhoda Green, 1890)
• Jabez Frank Davies – born 1873, died 21 March 1935, Yarraville, Melbourne, buried 23 March 1935, Footscray cemetery, Footscray, Melbourne, married Elizabeth Jane Stroud.

At the time of their marriage in 1900, Christopher was noted as age: 36 years; a “bachelor” and “miner”; born: Maldon; residence: Maldon; parents: Thomas Davies, a “miner” and Ann Smith. Catherine was noted as age: 30 years; a “spinster” and “domestic”; born: Mount Moliagul; residence: Maldon; parents: John Deason, a “miner” and Catherine McAndrew. They were married by Thomas Buson [unclear]; witnesses: Jabez Davies and Elizabeth Jane Davies (Christopher’s brother and his wife).

At the time of the birth of their first child, Christopher (John), in 1901 the family were living in Maldon,.

In 1903 they were still living in Maldon. The 1903 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Christopher’s occupation as: “miner”; Catherine’s as: “home duties” and their residence: Eaglehawk [part of Maldon]. And, in 1903, their second child, Gwyneth, was born in Maldon.

Maldon School admission records for April 1907 note Christopher as a “miner” living in Harker Street and the same in March 1910 but this time living in Reef Street.

By September 1907 the family moved to Moliagul where son Christopher (John) attended school; father Christopher noted as a “labourer” and living “¼ mile” from the school. Sister, Gwyneth commenced her schooling at Moliagul in July 1909; Christopher again noted as a “labourer” and living “¼ mile” from the school.

Later in 1909 the family moved back to Maldon. The 1909 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Christopher’s occupation as: “miner”; Catherine’s as: “home duties” and their residence: Harker St, Maldon. And later Maldon school records indicate the children re-commencing there in March 1910; father, Christopher, noted as a “miner” and living at Reef St.

By 1914 the family had moved back to Moliagul. The 1914 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Christopher’s occupation as: “labourer”; Catherine’s as: “no occupation” and their residence: Moliagul. Moliagul school records indicate the family still living there as late as 1917.

No clear record of Christopher and Catherine has been found in the Electoral Rolls for 1919 and 1924.

Elizabeth attended her brother Henry’s funeral at Moliagul, 21 June 1932. The obituary noted her as “Catherine (Mrs Davies, Dunolly)”. This may indicate that they were living in Dunolly.

After Catherine’s death in 1935, Christopher moved to the Gippsland region of Victoria. The 1936 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted his occupation as: “nil” and residence: East Bairnsdale. He may have been living with Elsie Medora Davies, also noted on the same roll as living in East Bairnsdale (relationship not known).

Christopher died in 1937; his death certificate recorded his mother’s maiden name as “Annester Wilson”. Possibly she had married prior to marrying Christopher’s father – Thomas Davies in 1853 – hence the use of the surnames “Smith” and “Wilson”. (Further research – unable to locate birth record & parent’s names).

Notes for Christopher Smith (Spouse 1)
At the time of their marriage in 1900, Christopher was noted as a bachelor and miner born Maldon, residence Maldon. His father was also noted as a miner. Catherine was noted as a spinster and domestic, born Mount Moliagul, residence Maldon. Her father was noted as a miner. Witnesses were Jabez Davies and Elizabeth Jane Davies (Christopher's brother and his wife).2

At the time of the birth of their first child, Christopher, in 1901 the family were living in Maldon.

By 1903 Christopher and Catherine had moved to Eaglehawk, Bendigo. The 1903 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Christopher’s occupation as: miner; Esther’s as: home duties and their residence: Eaglehawk. However, their second child, Gwyneth, is recorded as being born in 1903 at Maldon. Possibly, the family had returned to Maldon later in 1903

Maldon School admission records for April 1907 note Christopher as a miner living in Harker Street and in March 1910 note him again as a miner but this time living in Reef Street. At some time between these dates the family moved to Moliagul where the children attended school.2

The family was still living in Maldon in 1909. The 1909 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Christopher’s occupation as: miner; Esther’s as: home duties and their residence: Harker St, Maldon.

By 1914 the family had moved to Moliagul. The 1914 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Christopher’s occupation as: labourer; Esther’s as: no occupation and their residence: Moliagul.

No clear record of Christopher and Catherine has been found Electoral Rolls for 1919 and 1924.

Elizabeth attended her brother, Henry’s, funeral at Moliagul, 21 June 1932. The obituary noted her as “Catherine (Mrs Davies, Dunolly)” . This may indicate that she was living in Dunolly.

After Catherine’s death in 1935, Christopher moved to the Gippsland region of Victoria. The 1936 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted his occupation as: nil and his residence: East Bairnsdale. He may have been living with Elsie Medora Davies, also noted on the same roll as living in East Bairnsdale (relationship not known).

Christopher's death certificate in 1937 records his mother's maiden name as “Annester Wilson”. Possibly she had married prior to marrying Christopher's father - Thomas Davies - hence the use of the surnames “Smith” and “Wilson”. Further research required to clarify.2
