Notes for Herbert Henry (Henry) (Bert) DEASON
Herbert Henry was born 1888 in Moliagul where his father was an engine-driver and also farmed land (for details see 820). Herbert probably remained in Moliagul during his younger years and learnt to operate steam engines and farm the land.

The 1914 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Herbert Henry’s occupation as: “engine-driver” and residence: Moliagul. However, a second entry on the 1914 Roll noted Hubert [sic] Henry’s occupation as: engine-driver and his residence: Reedy Creek. Reedy Creek is a small village some 10 klms south-west of Broadford.

Herbert enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on 4th April 1916, was accepted on the 24th April 1916 and posted to the 7th Battalion/20th Reinforcements at Castlemaine, Victoria on 28th April 1916. At the time on his enlistment he was noted as a single, “farmhand”, residence: Moliagul and had previously served 6 months in a volunteer regiment some 6 years earlier.

For whatever reason, Herbert was admitted to Mt Alexander Hospital, Castlemaine on 16 June 1916. The hospital record noted:
Single; occupation, soldier; residence, Moliagul; born, Victoria; Religion, Methodist.

From Herbert’s AIF service records it is possible to detail his World War I history:
• 11 September 1916, embarked for England on Nestor
• 26 October 1916, disembarked from Euripides, Southampton, England and admitted sick to Devonport Hospital
• 20 December 1916, left Folkestone, Kent, England for France on SS Princess Clementine
• 21 December, arrived in France
• 22 December 1916, sent to 1st Division Base at Etaples, France
• 3 February 1917, proceeded to join unit at Etaples, France
• 7 February 1917, received by 7th Battalion, somewhere in France
• 24 May 1917, sent to Hospital in France and admitted to “P.U.O”
• 11 June 1917, returned to duty
• 19 June 1917, admitted to “P.U.O”, Rouen, France
• 9 July 1917, sent to England on HS Kalyan with ‘trench fever’
• 10 July 1917, admitted with ‘trench fever’ to 1st London General Hospital (St Gabriel’s College, Myats Park), Camberwell, England
• 23 July 1917, Herbert’s father advised he was admitted to 1st London General Hospital, Camberwell, England, 10 July 1917, “suffering from Trench fever”

Herbert received the 1914-1918 Star, British War Medal; and Victory Medal and was included on the Moliagul School’s ‘Roll of Honour’.
There is no mention of Herbert on the 1919 Electoral Roll. However, the 1924 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Herbert Henry’s occupation as: “engine-driver” and his residence: Moliagul.

Herbert took up a Closer Settlement (more commonly known as Soldier Settlement) property of some 642 acres at Moliagul, about 3 klms east of Moliagul and adjoining the eastern side of John and Catherine Deason’s property – The Springs (Allotment 1, Section 2, 642 acres, 2 roods, 14 perches, title issued 9 December 1948). Herbert’s son’s, Richard (Dick) and Arthur, later took over the property which was subdivided into two lots (Section 2, Lots 1 & 2, LP146313 & PS607665), .

In 1928 Herbert married Florence Bodsworth; their marriage certificate noting Herbert Henry as a “bachelor”; age: 40 years, occupation: “farmer”, residence: Moliagul, birthplace: Moliagul, father: Henry James Deason, “farmer”, mother Christina Sophia Van Berkel, and Florence Beatrice a “spinster”, age: 25 years, occupation: “saleswoman”, residence: Grange Rd, Sandringham, birthplace: Brighton, father: George Montague Bodsworth, “driver”, mother: Emily Victoria Clements. They were married by Rev William Courtenay Thomas, at the Methodist Church, Sandringham, 22 February 1928, witnesses: E M Deason and E G Bodsworth.

Herbert (Bert) served on the Moliagul School Committee 1936-1945 (President 1939-1944) and 1952-1953. Florence served 1946-1952.

The 1931, 1936, 1937, 1949 and 1954 Commonwealth Electoral Rolls noted Herbert Henry’s occupation as: “engine-driver”, Florence Beatrice’s as: “home duties” and their residence: Moliagul,,,,.
