Hilda was born 1891 in Moliagul where her father was an engine-driver and also farmed land (for details see Error! Reference source not found.). Hilda probably remained in Moliagul during her younger years up until her marriage in 1919 to Henry Gulley.

The 1914 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Hilda’s occupation as: ‘home duties” and residence: Moliagul.

At some stage after their marriage in 1919 Hilda and Henry set about farming at Lockwood. The 1931, 1936 and 1937 Commonwealth Electoral Rolls noted Henry’s occupation: “farmer” and Hilda’s: “home duties” and their residence: Lockwood, , . By 1943 they had moved to Bendigo; the 1943 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Henry’s occupation: “farmer” and Hilda’s: “home duties” and their residence: 5 Uley St, Bendigo.
