NOTE1. Dunolly Hosp Records - married RC b.VIC Admtd 7 May 1899 A27 - Dischd 21 May 1899

He was the son of Pierre Heraud (born 1833, died 1908) and Margaret Smith, also known as Margaret Celia and Margaret Cecily, born about 1843, died 1905, Rheola (note: death registration incorrectly records “Rhoda”), parents Thomas Smith and Ann Hempenstal. Rheola is located approximately 15 kms North of Moliagual on the Dunolly-Wedderburn Road.

Augustine’s father, Pierre (Peter) Heraud and his brother Martain (Martin) came to Victoria from Montpellier, France in early 1800’s (further research required). Pierre (Peter) married Margaret Smith in 1861 and his brother Martain (Martin) married Margaret’s sister, Elizabeth Louise, in 1865, Victoria.

The Smith family came to Moliagul in the 1860’s and were friends of the Deasons at the time of the discovery of the Welcome Stranger nugget in 1869. A Smith family descendant, noted:
- Thomas and Ann Smith (nee Hempenstal) were friends of John and Catherine Deason at Moliagul at the time of the finding of the Welcome Stranger gold nugget; and that
- Another of their daughters, Rose Ann Smith (then about 6 or 7 years old) was the small girl in the 1869 photograph showing the finding of the Welcome Stranger (reconstruction for newspaper article at the time).
Comment: if the small child is Rose Ann Smith then it is possible that the woman holding her hand is her mother, Ann Smith, and the well-dressed man standing behind, her father, Thomas Smith.

So it is likely that Grace and Augustine had known each other since they were children at Moliagul.

By 1892 Grace and Augustine had settled in Moliagul where four of their children were born during the period 1892 to 1906. Note: the Family Tree of Gloria Bennett & Eva Wilson (2002) indicates that Augustine and Grace may, in addition to the four children previously listed, have had a daughter, name unknown.

The 1903 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Augustine’s occupation as: “labourer”, Grace’s as: “home duties” and their residence: Moliagul. They were still in Moliagul in 1909; the Electoral Roll showing same details.

During this time Augustine is recorded in the admissions for Dunolly Hospital: married; labourer; Roman Catholic; 27 years in the colony [Victoria]; admitted 7 May 1899, discharged 21 May 1899.

By 1914 Grace and Augustine had moved back to Burke’s Flat where the Electoral Roll noted Augustine’s occupation as: “labourer:; Grace’s as: “home duties” and their residence: Burke’s Flat. They were still at Burke’s Flat in 1919, 1924, 1931 and 1936; the Electoral Rolls showing the same details,,,.

Grace attended her brother Henry’s funeral at Moliagul, 21 June 1932. The obituary noted her as “Ethel (Mrs Heraud, Burke’s Flat)”. Note: no other reference has been found of Grace being called “Ethel”.

In 1942 Grace and Augustine were still living at Burke’s Flat where Augustine worked as a market gardener.

The 1949 Electoral Roll noted Augustine as: “labourer”, Grace as: “home duties” and residence: Burke’s Flat. By 1954 only Augustine was living at Burke’s Flat; the Electoral Roll for that year noted the same information as for 1949. Note: Grace’s whereabouts not known.

Grace’s story of the discovery of the Welcome Stranger nugget was re-told in 1969:
Note on the past … Weekly Times, 26 February 1969, p 71 (a continuation of the ‘Welcome Stranger’ story on p 70) :
A descendant of Deason, a partner in the discovery of the famous Welcome Stranger gold nugget, has died in Melbourne.

She was Mrs. Grace Oates Heraud, born Grace Oates Deason.

Her husband and son live at Red Cliffs, Victoria.

Mrs. Heraud was born at Dunolly 85 years ago.

Her father and a man named Oates found the famous nugget at Tarnagulla – they were penniless when they discovered the huge piece of pure gold.

It was rushed to Dunolly but there were not any scales available that would take its weight.

A memorial to Oates and Deason was built near the spot where the nugget was found. Now, a new generation of prospectors is digging around the memorial seeking more gold.

Mr. Heraud, jnr. says, “I think grandfather got all the gold from that spot.”

His father shaped the imitation stone now in the Melbourne Museum. It was cut from ironstone and painted. Mr. Heraud, snr., is in hospital.

Comments:
- Augustine Heraud lived the later part of his life in Red Cliffs, Victoria; and
- “Mr Heraud, jnr.” is likely to be Augustine’s son, James Joseph Heraud, who also lived at Red Cliffs.

Notes for Grace Oates (Spouse 1)
Named after Richard Oates, co-founder of the "Welcome Stranger".

Grace was born in 1872 at Moliagul. From 1864 to 1869 the Deason family had lived at Bulldog Gully, Moliagul where Grace’s father prospected for gold and farmed land in partnership with Richard Oates. At some stage, soon after the discovery of the Welcome Stranger nugget in 1869, the family moved to the farm called The Springs, just outside Moliagul.

Grace probably stayed at The Springs until late 1888 when financial difficulties forced her parents, John and Catherine, and the two youngest boys (John & James) to seek work in Melbourne and let out The Springs. There was no mention of daughter Grace going to Melbourne so it is presumed that she must have stayed behind with relatives or friends – possibly with her brother Henry and his wife in Moliagul.

By about 1890/1891 John and Catherine moved back to The Springs.

In 1891, Grace married Augustine Heraud at McIntyre; a small gold-mining village situated approximately 10 kilometres north of Moliagul on the Dunolly-Wedderburn Road.

Augustine’s father, Pierre (Peter) Heraud and his brother Martain (Martin) came to Victoria from Montpellier, France in early 1800s (further research required). Pierre (Peter) married Margaret Smith in 1861 and his brother Martain (Martin) married Margaret’s sister, Elizabeth Louise Smith, in 1865, Victoria.

Margaret’s parents, Thomas and Ann Smith came to Moliagul in the 1860s and were friends of the Deasons at the time of the discovery of the Welcome Stranger nugget in 1869. A Smith family descendant, noted:

By 1954 only Augustine was living at Burke’s Flat; the Electoral Roll for that year noted the same information as for 1949. Grace may have been residing in Melbourne at the Cheltenham Home and Hospital for the Aged (MHHA) as at the time of her burial in 1956 she was noted as age: 85 years, residence: “MHHA”, grave: 20*209*N.

Sometime after 1954 Augustine moved to Red Cliffs, where his son, James Joseph, was living, and died there October 1956, buried 2 November 1956, Red Cliffs Pioneer Cemetery, Red Cliffs, Victoria, Australia.

Grace’s story of the discovery of the Welcome Stranger nugget was re-told in 1969:
