Hugh and Elizabeth's marriage notice appeared in the Bendigo Advertiser 16 August 1888:
“DEASON - SCADDAN On the 4th August at the residence of the bride's parents by Rev W Williams. Hugh M, third son of Mr J DEASON of Mt Moliagul, to Elizabeth A, second daughter of Mr W H SCADDAN of Eaglehawk”.

Was married by Rev W. Williams.

Hugh was born in 1864 on the Bendigo goldfields. The family soon moved to Moliagul, where his father, John, had worked, possibly intermittently, from as early as 1862,, prospecting for gold and looking for farming land.

From 1864 to 1869 the Deason family lived at Bulldog Gully, Moliagul where Hugh’s father prospected for gold and farmed land in partnership with Richard Oates. At some stage, soon after the discovery of the Welcome Stranger nugget in 1869, the family moved to the farm called The Springs, just outside Moliagul. Hugh probably stayed here until he married in 1888.

The 1884 Government Mining Register noted Hugh as a licensed engine driver at Goldsborough; a mining settlement situated between Moliagul and Dunolly.

Hugh and Elizabeth married in 1888. Their marriage notice appeared in the Bendigo Advertiser, 16 August 1888:
DEASON – SCADDAN On the 4th August at the residence of the bride’s parents by Rev W Williams. Hugh M, third son of Mr J DEASON of Mt Moliagul, to Elizabeth A, second daughter of Mr W H SCADDAN of Eaglehawk.

Hugh and Elizabeth moved to Fryerstown, near Castlemaine. By 1914 they owned 3 blocks of land, totalling some 2 acres:
- Allotment 1a, Section 14 – 1 acre, 0 roods, 21 perches, title issued 9 October 1912;
- Allotment 1b, Section 14 – 1 acre, 0 roods, 14 perches, title issued 12 March 1914; and
- Allotment 9b, Section 13 – 0 acres, 2 roods, 36 perches, title issued 12 March 1914.
Their home was situated on the Allotment 1a on High St. Allotment 1b was also on High St and Allotment 9b situated at the rear of Allotment 1a & 1b and extending over Fryers Creek. This effectively gave then a large parcel of land on both sides of Fryers Creek where the good soil enabled them to have an orchard. The house is still occupied as a dwelling (2013).

The 1903 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Hugh McAndrew’s occupation as: “engine-driver”; Elizabeth Ann’s [sic] as: “home duties” and their residence: Fryerstown. The 1909, 1914, 1919, and 1931 Electoral Rolls recorded the same information,,,. The 1924 Electoral Roll noted the same residence but noted Hugh McAndrew’s occupation as: “mining engine-driver”.
Hugh and Elizabeth were keen orchardists and were mentioned in a 1926 newspaper article as hosting a meeting of fruit growers:
Mr Tomlinson, district fruit expert, met a representative number of fruitgrowers on the orchard of Mr H Deason, at Fryerstown, and gave an interesting demonstration on orchard pests. Mr Tomlinson explained that the best way to eradicate codlin [sic] moth was to bandage the trees in the autumn and destroy the grub during the winter.

A small thrip fly is giving the orchardists much concern, as it destroys the flower bud of the apples.

Later, Hugh and his brother Alfred went to work as engine-drivers at Harrietville in the Ovens Valley, north-eastern Victoria. They were noted as “top winders” at the Shamrock mine situated some 1.5 kilometres SW of Harrietville. The mine operated from 1920 to 1934.

Hugh attended his brother Henry’s, funeral at Moliagul, 21 June 1932. The obituary noted him as “Hugh (Fryerstown)”.

After Elizabeth’s death in 1934, Hugh continued to live in Fryerstown. The 1936 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Hugh McAndrew’s occupation as: “engine-driver” and his residence: Fryerstown.

However, by 1937 Hugh had moved to Bendigo. The 1937 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Hugh McAndrew’s occupation as: “engine-driver” and his residence: 15 Palmerston St, Bendigo. He probably only lived there for a short period as there is another record on the 1937 roll noting Hugh McAndrew’s occupation as: “retired” and his residence: Caldwells Rd, Eaglehawk.

Hugh and Elizabeth’s grave is located in the Eaglehawk cemetery – row 1K8 in the Methodist section. Hugh’s burial record noted him as an engine driver.
