Alfred William was born, 1901, Eaglehawk, Bendigo. By 1902 the family may have moved to Fryerstown where Alfred’s sister, Leaflet, was born. By 1903 his family had moved to Moonlight Flat, Moonlight, a small village about 5 kilometres west of Maryborough, where his father was an “engine-driver”.

By 1905 the family were probably living in Inglewood where Alfred’s sister, Zephyr, was born and by 1906, Newbridge, where brother, Hugh, was born (registered Tarnagulla).

By 1909 the family had moved to Moliagul where, brother, Thomas, was born (registered Dunolly and his father worked as an “engine-driver”.

By 1912 the family were probably living in Inglewood where sister, Venus, was born and prior to August 1913, Bridgewater, where Alfred William and brother, Hughie, and sister, Leaflet, attended school.

From August 1913 until early 1914 the family lived in Moliagul. Moliagul State School records:
Alfred Deason; date of birth: 10 January 1901; admission: 18 August 1913; parent: Alfred Deason; parent’s residence: Moliagul; distance from school: ½ mile; parent’s occupation: engine driver; school last attended: McArthur; highest grade attained: 6; left: early 1914: destination: Newbridge.
Note: “McArthur School, No. 1097” is correctly Bridgewater State School, McArthur St, Bridgewater.

In early 1914 the family moved to Newbridge (as noted on Alfred William’s school records) where his father worked as a “miner”.

Later in 1914 the family moved to Fryerstown where Alfred’s father continued work as an “engine-driver”. However, by late 1915 they had returned to Newbridge (as noted on brother Thomas’s school records) and were still there in 1916.

In 1919 the family moved to Diamond Hill, Bendigo.

By 1924 Alfred had struck out on his own and moved to the Melbourne suburb of Northcote. The 1924 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Alfred William’s occupation as: “engine-driver” and his residence as: 46 Union St, [Northcote] .

Alfred is likely to the Albert William Deason referred to in a newspaper article of 1924:
Railway Prosecutions
Complaints made by railway station staff at Merri led to the appearance at the Northcote Court on Monday of …; Albert William Deason of Union street, Merri; … [& six others] on charges of trespass. Each defendant was fined £1, with 5/- costs. The offence occurred on February 2.
Note: Merri is an inner Melbourne suburb.

In 1926 Alfred married Mavis Jean Scadden.

By 1931, Alfred and Mavis were living in nearby Westgarth. The 1931 and 1936 Commonwealth Electoral Rolls noted Alfred William’s occupation as: “engine-driver”, Mavis Jean’s as: “home duties” and their residence as: 50 McLachlan St, [Westgarth],.

By 1937 Alfred commenced operating his own carrying company. The 1937 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Alfred William’s occupation as: “carrier”, Mavis Jean’s as: “home duties” and their residence as: 50 McLachlan St, Westgarth, Melbourne. And by 1942 they had moved to Preston. The 1942 and 1949 Commonwealth Electoral Rolls noted Alfred William’s occupation as: “carrier”, Mavis Jean’s as: “home duties” and their residence as: 94 Gilbert Rd, Preston, Melbourne, .

After Alfred’s death in 1958, Mavis travelled to England, arriving London, 19 May 1959, on the Iberia which noted:
born: 20 Sep 1904, age: 54 years, forward address: Cumberland Hotel, Marble Arch, London, duration: 3 months, port of departure: Melbourne.
