Notes for Zephyr Evelyn (Zeph) (Spouse 1)
Zephyr Evelyn (Zeph) was born, 1905, Inglewood. By 1906, her family had moved to Newbridge, where brother, Hugh, was born (registered Tarnagulla).

By 1909 the family had moved to Moliagul where brother, Thomas, was born (registered Dunolly) and Zeph’s father worked as an “engine-driver”.

By 1912 the family were probably living in Inglewood where sister, Venus, was born and prior to August 1913, in Bridgewater where Zeph’s brothers Alfred and Hughie and sister Leaflet attended school.

From August 1913 until early 1914 the family lived in Moliagul where Alfred, Hughie and Leaflet attended school. In early 1914 the family moved to Newbridge (as noted on Hughie’s school records) and where Zeph’s father worked as a “miner”.

Later in 1914 the family moved to Fryerstown where Zeph’s father continued work as an “engine-driver”. However, by late 1915 they had returned to Newbridge (as noted on brother Thomas’s school records) and were still there in 1916.

From February to April 1916 the family lived in Newbridge. Moliagul State School records:
Zephyr Deason; date of birth: 15 April 1905; admission: 1 February 1916; parent: Alfred Deason; parent’s residence: Newbridge; distance from school: 2 miles; parent’s occupation: engine driver; school last attended: Newbridge; highest grade attained: 5; left: 20 April 1916: destination: Newbridge.

In 1919 the family moved to Diamond Hill, Bendigo and by 1924 closer to central Bendigo at 627 Hargreaves St.

Zephyr (Zeph) married James Alfred (Alf) Warburton in 1926.

After, their marriage Zeph and Alf set about farming at Lalbert, near Quambatook (about 100 klms north-west of Bendigo). The 1931 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted James Alfred’s occupation: “farmer” and Zephyr Evelyn’s: “home duties” and their residence: Lalbert. In 1936 they were still living at Lalbert; the 1936 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted James Alfred’s occupation: “labourer” and Zephyr Evelyn’s: “home duties” and their residence: Lalbert.

By 1937 they had moved to nearby Beauchamp; the 1937 Commonwealth Electoral Rolls noted James Alfred’s occupation: “labourer” and Zephyr Evelyn’s: “home duties”, their residence: Beauchamp, . In addition, Zephyr spent some time in Geelong; the 1937 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Zephyr Evelyn’s occupation: “home duties” and her residence: 21 Fitzroy St, Geelong.

By 1943 Zephyr and Alf had moved to Woorinen (near Swan Hill); the 1943 and 1954 Commonwealth Electoral Rolls noted James Alfred’s occupation: “orchardist” and Zephyr Evelyn’s: home duties, their residence: Woorinen, .

Zephyr’s daughter-in-law, Beverly (‘Bev’), recalled in 2012:
Zephyr Deason (Warburton) was very active in the Woorinen community. She was in the local CWA for many years and was an active office-bearer in the local “Mothers Club” at our local primary school for many years. Zephyr was also a regular church-goer at the Woorinen Methodist church. Every year she would walk all over our tiny town collecting donations for the Red Cross appeal. She loved gardening and every year would hold a garden party at her house and over the years raised a lot of money which was donated to the Swan Hill Hospital. After her death the local community raised enough money to buy a special bed and donated it to the hospital. It has a plaque on it dedicating it to her memory.

There was an “unspoken competition” among the local ladies at these fundraising activities as to who could bake the nicest sponge cake. There were some wonderful cooks among the ladies. There were not a lot of electric beaters around in those days and the ladies would have to use the old hand beaters and old wood stoves.

Zephyr loved to get together with her sister Leaf in Bendigo, and the two women would spend their time together doing a lot of talking and laughing. She was a wonderful woman.

The Warburton’s started a transport business in the late 1940’s; Alf and son, Hughie started carting dried fruit – sultanas, raisins and currants - to the local “packing shed” at Woorinen South. The area was settled by soldier settlers who grew grapes. Alf’s youngest son, Barry, eventually joined the business and they branched out into general carting and a lot of hay carting. Barry’s son, Leigh, now runs the business today; he has expanded the business and now runs three semi-trailers and a tray body. He also carts hay, but his main business is the carting of wine grapes from the local area to Griffith, NSW and Mildura, Vic as well as the local wineries.
