He was a mariner. His father William was a labourer. This is
almost certainly the Woodcock who was on the ship "Little
Western" on the night of 7 April 1861 when the census was taken.

At the time of their marriage in 1837, William was noted as a “bachelor” and “mariner” from Tresco; father, William, a “labourer”; and Celia a “spinster” from Tresco, her father, Thomas, a “mariner”. Witnesses: Thomas Jones and Eliza Jenkins.
At the time of son William’s baptism in 1839 the family was living on Tresco. At the time of daughter Elizabeth’s baptism in 1843 William was noted as a “sailor” and the family was living on Tresco. At the time of Matilda’s baptism in 1847 and Herbert’s’ in 1852 William was noted as a “labourer” and the family was living on St Marys.
