This is a list of Cornish (largely from the Penzance area) who came to Akron, Ohio during the 1910 time period to work in the five major rubber factories in town. Most of the names were obtained from naturalization records or marriage documents in Summit County Court House and birth and death records.

In 1914 George visited the USA; departing 3 January 1914, Liverpool, England; and arriving New York on the Lusitania. The ship’s records noted:
George D Pender, age: 21 years, single, occupation: motor mechanic, nationality: England, last residence: Penzance; nearest relative: father, John Pender, St Anthony’s Cottage, Promenade, Penzance
Note: destination probably his brother, Arthur, Akron, Ohio.

In 1915 George and Hilda emigrated to the USA; departing 12 June 1915, Liverpool, England; and arriving New York on the New York. The ship’s records noted:
George Deason Pender, age: 23 years, married, occupation: mechanic, nationality: G Britain, last residence: Akron, Ohio; nearest relative: father, Mr Pender, St Anthony’s Cottage, Promenade, Penzance;
Hilda Clare [sic] Pender, age: 26, married, occupation: housewife, nationality: G Britain; last residence: St Ives, [Cornwall], England, nearest relative: not stated.

In 1917 George was required to register for the armed services, his registration card noted:
George Deason Pender, age: 24 years, address: 293 Market St, Akron, Ohio, date of birth: 8 June 1892, born: Bognor, Sussex, England, occupation: private chauffeur, …
However, there is no record of him enlisting.

In 1920 George and Hilda were in Akron, Ohio as noted in the Census:
124 South Balch St, Akron, Ohio:
George Pender, head [of household], married, age: 27 years, immigrated to USA: 1914, naturalized: no, born: England, occupation: mechanic
Hilda Pender, wife, married, age: 30 years, immigrated to USA: 1915, naturalized: no, born: England, occupation: none stated.

About 1922 George and Hilda returned to England and later returned to the USA: departing 27 January 1923, Liverpool, England; and arriving New York on the Caronia. The ship’s records noted:
George Deason Pender, age: 30 years, married, occupation: mechanic, nationality: Britain; last residence: St Ives, [Cornwall], England; nearest relative: father, Mr Pender, 25 Gwavas St, Penzance; destination: Akron, Ohio
Hilda Clair Pender, age: 33, married, occupation: housewife, nationality: Britain, last residence: St Ives, [Cornwall], England; nearest relative: father-in-law, Mr Pender, 25 Gwavas St, Penzance; destination: Akron, Ohio.

George and Hilda may have later returned to England as they do not appear in the 1930 USA Census.

At the time of his death in 1984 George was noted as age 91 years.
