Josephine (Jean) was born in 1914 on the goldfields of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia where her father worked on the mines. The family was still in Kalgoorlie a year later when her brother, Thomas, was born. After her father joined the WA Police, around 1920, they moved to Fremantle where they lived in the Police cottages at the entrance to Fremantle prison. By 1925 they had moved to 14 Henderson St, Fremantle.
Ernest’s mother (Ada Beatrice Duck) and her family moved to Western Australia in 1906 and changed their surname to Smith.
