Notes for Thomas Hector (Tom) DEASON
Birth registration: 1915/275/East Coolgardie.5

Thomas (Tom) was born in 1915 on goldfields of Kalgoorlie where his father worked on the mines. After his father joined the WA Police, around 1920, the family moved to Fremantle where they lived in the Police cottages at the entrance to Fremantle prison. By 1925 they had moved to 14 Henderson St, Fremantle.

Later in the 1920’s Tom’s family moved south to the timber mills where his father worked as an engine-driver; initially, to Mornington Mill near Harvey, WA and later Nanga Brook, WA. It was probably at the mills that young Tom learnt his trade as an engine-driver.

Young Tom then worked at the Kalgoorlie mines as an engine driver. About 1936 he followed his parents to Mt Palmer (near Yellowdine) WA where he also worked as an engine driver. This included a period with the Yellowdine Gold Development Ltd at Mt Palmer from May 1936 to March 1937. A least one Winding Engine Driver’s Certificate of Competency (dated 7 June 1937) is known to exist from this period and the 1937 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Thomas Hector’s occupation as: “fireman” and residence: Mt Palmer.

About 1937 Tom Deason and Jack Towers (Florence Tower's brother) went to Melbourne to live with Frederick and Selina Towers. Tom obtained a Victorian Engine Driver's 'Certificate of Registration' on 22 November 1937.3

It was in Melbourne that Tom met and married Pat Tyrell.3

Pat’s parents, Joseph and Florence moved to Melbourne sometime between August and December 1923. About 1925/1926 Joseph returned to the sea and was reportedly ‘lost at sea’ about 1925/1927.

Pat was looked after in WA for the next 5 years by her maternal grandparents, Frederick Wilson Towers and Selina May Towers (nee Stone) at Nanga Brook, WA. Frederick worked as a ‘saw doctor’ at the timber mill in Nanga Brook, WA from about 1927 to 1932. During that time he met Tom Deason who also worked at the same timber mill.

About 1931 Frederick and Selina Towers, together with grand-daughter Pat, moved to Melbourne.

May’s mother, Florence married again in about 1931, to Jack Tyrrell. Pat took on the surname Tyrrell and Florence and Jack had one children - Lois born about 1933.

In 1943 Tom and Pat were living in the Melbourne suburb of Albert Park. The 1943 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Thomas Hector’s occupation as: “attendant” and residence: 47 Bridport St, Albert Park. By 1954 they were living in nearby South Melbourne. The 1954 Commonwealth Electoral Roll noted Thomas Hector’s occupation as: “engineer” and residence: 301 Park St, South Melbourne.

At some stage (after 1974) Tom and Pat visited George and Grace Deason at their home in Perth, Western Australia. George, originally from Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, was Tom’s nephew. Tom and Pat were at the time living at 50 Somerset St, Wantirna South, Melbourne.

In 1985Tom and Pat returned to Perth, Western Australia. They were residents of Melville, Perth, WA at the time of their deaths (1989 & 1993).
