Notes for Richard Scadden DEASON
Note: for Richard’s baptism Baxter research (1975) notes Off-island Register used but does not mention which island.

There is no record of Richard’s mother Ann and step-father Barnet on the Isles of Scilly after 1830. Richard appears to have been raised by Ann’s brother John from an early age. At the time of his wedding in 1854, Richard refers to John as his “father” .

The 1851 Census recorded:
Old Town, St Mary’s, Isles of Scilly, Cornwall (at the residence of Samuel & Mary Jenkins):
Richard Deacon [Deason], visitor, unmarried, age: 21 years, occupation: seaman, born: Isles of Scilly

On 9 April 1851 Richard joined the crew of the Little Pet (registered Scilly) as a ‘mate’. Crewlist records noted his ticket (i.e. certificate) as #97015, age: 21, born: Scilly, joined ship: Scilly, previous ship: Herbert (registered Scilly), trade: foreign (i.e. to foreign ports), discharged: 23 June 1851, Bristol.

Richard received his Master’s Certificate of Competency in 1853, Plymouth. It noted his certificate as #7883, born 1829, Scilly and licensed to master ‘fore-and-aft rigged’ vessels only. Later records (1869) list Richard as Master of:
- Emerald – 1853-1855; operating – North America and Mediterranean;
- Harriet Steward – 1855; operating – Baltic
- Emerald – 1856; operating – France, Portugal and Spain;
- The Gazelle – 1856; operating – Mediterranean;
- Minalto – 1856-1859 – operating – South America, France, Portugal and Spain; lost 11 April 1859;
- Salmon – 1860-1868 – operating – South America, France, Portugal, Spain and Mediterranean

At the time of their marriage in 1854, Richard was noted as “bachelor”; “master mariner”; son of “John Deason, farmer”; Caroline a “spinster”; daughter of “Samuel Jenkins, farmer”; and both from St Mary’s.

Richard was Master of The Gazelle when it was lost on 21 April 1856 off North Africa:
The Gazelle, Deason, of Scilly, from Cardiff for Messina, with coals, which was stranded 17 miles from Tangier, April 21, has been abandoned, condemned, and sold.

The 1861 Census recorded:
Old Town, St Mary’s, Isles of Scilly, Cornwall (at the residence of Samuel & Caroline Jenkin):
Caroline Deason, daughter, married, age: 28 years, occupation: master mariner’s wife, born: St Mary’s, Isles of Scilly

Richard was the master of the steamer Earl of Arran when it was lost off the Scillies, 16 July 1872:
A Board of Trade inquiry was held at Penzance on Saturday to elicit the circumstances attending the loss of the passenger and mail steamer Earl of Arran, which was wrecked off the Scilly Islands on the 16th of July. The vessel, it seemed, was an hour late in leaving Penzance, in consequence of the mails, and when nearing Scilly, having been steered for Crow Sound, a passenger on board, named Stephen Woodcock, whom the master believed to be a licensed pilot, suggested that she should be taken through a passage known as St Martin’s Neck, by doing which, he said half an hour would be saved. He offered to pilot the ship through, and was put in charge. Being as he says an hour out in his calculations regarding the tide the ship ran ashore on the Irishmen’s Ledge, and ultimately became a total wreck. All the passengers and nearly all the cargo were saved. The master, Captain Deason, contended, through his solicitor Mr Trythall, that he was not to blame, believing as he did, that Woodcock was a duly licensed pilot, and knowing also that he had previously piloted vessels. The Court held that the master was guilty of a grave error in judgement, and suspended his certificate for four months. …

At the time of Richard’s burial in 1874 he was noted as aged 44 years and from Penzance. His headstone in the Old St Mary’s churchyard, noted him as a shipping Captain.

The 1881 Census recorded:
Old Town, St Mary’s, Isles of Scilly, Cornwall (at the residence of Samuel & Caroline Jenkin):
Caroline Deason, daughter, widow, age: 48 years, occupation: annuitant, born: St Mary’s, Isles of Scilly

At the time of Caroline’s burial in 1885 she was noted as aged 52 years and from Old Town, St Mary’s.
